Ok......the first rules could be that all those people that Factor described.........don't play........

oh no  ..........I've started already

Lets just give it a wack!

I quite like Spacko's idea on seeding, maybe individuals can sign up, and Cheese & Spack (plus input from other time zone player) can organise everyone into teams.

Either way its only a bit o fun, it won't cause a slur on anyone's integrity, win or loose.

So it's looking like enough of you are wanting this that I'm considering jumping into the disaster zone that is a Tournament. Before I commit to anything, I want to know if someone else with a server is interesting in being in charge of this. See, if a Tournament is going to be held using UnityHQ servers, then I'm part of the package that comes along with it. Good or bad, whatever would happen in a Unity server would reflect back on me, eliteone and this site so there is no way I'm blindly placing that into someone else's hands. So if anyone is interested in being the head honcho for this and wants to provide a server, then please speak up because I sure have no problem passing this particular headache to someone else. :P

If I end up doing this there will not be any mad rush to get it started. We would take time to think things through, create rules everyone agrees on and make sure this doesn't sour people towards the game like in the past. It would NOT be a clan tournament, it would be open to all NOLF players. It would be played in a server running the most current anti-cheat mod available at the time.

Oh, most importantly, it would be a group effort. While I might insist on being the main organizer if UnityHQ is hosting, that doesn't mean I want to be a dictator about it and decide things without feedback from everyone else. Anyone that wants to be involved, can be.

After this coming Superbowl Sunday I'll get the wheels in motion if people want me to. In the meantime, a fun hassle-free UnityHQ Weekend is being planned, so please visit THIS post and vote what type of game you are interested in. :)

Firstly, Bella, I am sorry that this whole idea gives you some headaches.

secondly I am (occasionally foolishly) an optimistic person and believe anything is possible (except beating Moody in a one on one)

Before your post I was about to take the bull by the horns and say I would organize this with yours and Eliteones backing - butting having read your post I understand you and hope someone may be able to offer the use of a server - if your hearts not in it you shouldn't be doing it.

Then some volunteers to help with the team organisation be it seeded or random.

Then To post a register thread, with clearly defined rules so each individual knows what to expect and what is expected of them(including times, how teams will be chosen, gameplay etiquette etc)

So please anyone who can volunteer a server please come forward - my expectations are that this should only last a weekend - group stages on Saturday, semis and final on sunday.

Lastly - first thing is first and thats the Unity HQ weekend so please get your votes in for Bella.

I don't know if this is feasible (spectator mod?), but would it be worthwhile to have a couple of referees in the game in addition to the anti-cheat mod?

I've just seen a lot of bad things happen from tournaments so I'm determined not to see the same things happen again and have the bad results reflected back on Unity. My heart would certainly be in it if I took it on, I'd never offer to do something I couldn't handle, but I also realize I'm not going at it without joyous optimism. Sure, it's a headache, anyone who doesn't think so clearly doesn't know what they're getting into. That doesn't mean I can't do it. Heck, these forums are a headache too, but I love them and am dedicated to them. So don't interpret hesitation to mean I'd not jump in and do the job as best as I could. :D

Besides, there's no reason you can't be the 'main man' of the project. I just need it to be known that when it comes to a Tournament in Unity servers, I have to be involved. I can't tell you how many times I've seen things like this started then never completed because one person got tired of it. I can promise not to go anywhere (unless the Grim Reaper calls). :P

Don't know if this was said yet, but it would be much easier to schedule if the tournament was set up like this...

All the US players would be matched against themselves to determine the winner(s) of the US side. The Euros would do the same to get their winning team as well. That way, we would only have to schedule one game between Euros and USA (or a couple more depending if it is a best of 3 matches, etc.). All the players points will be tallied up to decide the 8 players that will move on to the World match.

Any ideas? :friends:

I think it is a geographical issue in that it is easier to play in your own time zones first so you don't have as many scheduling conflicts...

yes it is definatly better to play euro's first and USA first...

this way, all the euro's are generally near in time zone, and usa is near in time zone, so all matches can be scheduled easier...

um, as for teams...

are we gonna want to like...

pick our own teams, or throw names into a hat and pick?

or maybe like...

get a list of EVERYONE that joins...and then in ABC order, assign them a #...and then thats what team # they are on...

maybe...

Well I think that's a horrible idea. Okay, not really, but a bad one. When has the Nolf community EVER divided into a European and an American one? For any reason? We haven't and it's gotten us this far. Besides, there would be an obvious ping disadvantage if the teams were all European and all American. In any case, most of us tend to play at times when we overlap anyway. I vote nay to separate US and Euro conferences.

Ok, good point. Why not have continental matches to whittle down the field, sort the mice from the men, the wheat from the chaff, etc? Once we've narrowed the field to the best from Europe and USA, *then* we could mix up the teams. That way, we get to minimize the scheduling hassle, but still have the ping advantage of us yanks nullified by mixing up the teams at the final stages.

I thought that was the proposal to which I just voted nay :P

Plus... How many Nolfers would realistically sign up for such a tournament? 20-30 from each continent? Anyhow logistically that might be an advantage as we could get nearly double effective playing hours per day/weekend, but if this is supposed to be a team tournament (and that's how I see it so far) then how can we just mix teams up in the playoffs? Suppose a top notch player is stuck with one rookie and one no-show as his or her teammates and does not make it into the playoffs? Teams have such a huge impact and if the teams are not the same throughout the tournament it all gets kinda fishy.

What we could do, is have a DM one on one-competition between all the players on each continent and eliminate, all but 8 or 10 or something from each continent. Alternatively do what SFI did the other day and play an entire rotation of the DM maps in a row... Sum up everyone's scores... And then the best total scores move on to the team round. Come to think of it, the latter would take so much less time - it would just depend on a lotta people being in the same place, in the same time. But scheduled way ahead, why not? And THEN with the 10 or something best from each continent we make mixed teams? Of course this would also be an odd arrangement, with two different forms of competition in one tournament, but I don't mind creative solutions.

I like that idea Spacko the play the rotation of DM maps and total the scores.

Right! Me too actually :P. I guess we could even use the Euro server then for the European heat(s). One possible catch is that one heat might be much easier than another if we do several per continent. Then again 16 spots allows 16 players in each heat right? Hm I am actually liking this idea aswell! What say the rest of ye?

Plus, how to do this further on? Oooh how about. Assembling those teams based on the results from the continental heats? If we keep the 12 best from each continent moving on we might get... EU1, US1, EU12 and US12 all on the same team. Meaning the 1st and 12th places from both continents are teammates. Onwards that means 2's and 11's, 3's and 10's, 4's and 9's, 5's and 8's and 6's and 7's. Making... Six four (wo)man teams for the playoffs. Might not be dreadfully unfair! Of course there's the issue of possible no-shows (even multiple :S). Hm. Shall think about this today at work!

WOOT lets bring it on :gun:

So how's this? One morning and one afternoon heat per continent on Saturday. Best half of each heat are qualified for the playoffs, and are divided into no less than four and no more than eight four man teams. (All of this is based on participation of 16-32 players from each continent, which I believe is a reasonable expectation.)

I know there may be problems with uneven numbers of players in a heat, in which case we will just have to consider getting the teams right for the playoffs. You may or may not get lucky. As there are no guarantees we will get heats perfectly divisible by two, or even evenly sized heats, we're just gonna have to be grand about that part and leave it in the hands of the tournament masters.

Anyhow now we have 16-32 players and I was thinking, how about a good old "team captains pick" solution? We could seed people according to their placements in the first round, and team captains could be randomly drawn out of a hat. Then they would have to choose one player from each seeding level with the exception of their own. I would really like to add some element of choice to this, so people get to play partially at least with those they feel they know. Plus this way it could get tough and almost fair! w00t.

That's what I've got so far. Any thoughts or input?
