For those of you who are about to laugh, let me strike first: **** YOU!

But seriously, alright, I was using my dads laptop and about one month ago,

i noticed that Windows Messenger (WM), not MSN IM (MIM), would automaticly

sign me in and run in the background, and i noticed only because IM windows popped up...

anyway i quickly went to WM and clicked on tools, options and preferences and i unclicked

"Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts" (note: i also unclicked other boxes but this

one is the most important) and then i deleted all the shortcuts and removed WM from my

"Add or Remove Programs" feature in the control panel, anyway i thought WM was dead but

no, even doing all this ^ it still signs me auto everytime this computer (dad's) starts.

So im like "o noez!!1! teh h4x0rs got me!!!!!1!!!1!" and went to the "Add/Remove Windows

Components" feature inside the Add or Remove Programs and then i unclicked all the checkboxes

except WM and clicked next so the process would start, not only did it not delete WM,

it deleted several programs including Internet Explorer which we use to go online, and

it said the routine "To fully complete this process please restart now" and i clicked no of course

and now im scared to shut down because it might finalize the deletion of those programs.

Damn damn damn!!!!! HELP!

I'm pretty sure there were online instructions on how to prevent that exact problem somewhere in the Internet Explorer site. Have you googled it? As for preventing IE from getting uninstalled, no idea how to fix that little mess. I do know it never really fully uninstalls, though, because I tried it once. :P

IE shouldn't "uninstall" entirely as it's part of the windows OS. Make sure system restore is active etc and if soemthing screws up you have a restore point to go back too.

Have you installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 yet? if not, go ahead and reboot, then run teh service pack. that'll add everything back. lemme know if you need the SP -- i can post it on my web space so you can download it more easily than from the windows site. before you reboot, make sure you use IE one last time to go out and get another browser, like FireFox. (www.mozilla.org). that way, if the IE really does get removed, you can still use something to help you get back on your feet. Good luck!

Don't worry... You'll find IE here

To uninstall windows messenger, go to 'add/remove programs'

but click the submenu called 'add/remove windows components'

and unselect 'windows messenger' at the bottom of the list and hit 'next' :)

while WM is running, open your task manager (right click the task bar, click task manager). Look at the services that are running, and figure out exactly what WM is called (something like "WM.exe"?). Then boot into safe mode, and rename that file to something like WMold.exe. Try that, and when Window tries to launch WM.exe next time it starts, it won't be able to find it. OH! try this first: Once you've found out the name of WM, click Start>Run then type "services.msc" and hit <Enter>. Find WM on the list of services, double click it, then chose "disable" from the drop down list. Reboot. Should take care of it!

Are you running Norton Antivirus by chance? NAV will load IM programs in the background when it starts because it wants to check for IM viruses.
