[TNT] Sonic Goo Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 This map is set in a floating city, like those you see in Asia. The two bases are in two floating restaurants and the player will have to jump from boat to boat to get to the other side. Hopefully this will make for an interesting change in scenery and gameplay. Here are some screenshots (do those posted pictures on forums look really dark to anyone? Could it have something to do with flatscreen vs. normal monitors?) A look at some of the boats (I think...). The red restaurant. You can go swim a bif if you like. Looking through the restaurant to the other side. You can download the .rez file here. And for those who like that sort of thing, the .lta file is here. This is only the beta version. There are some improvements I've already planned, like some custom textures to give it more coleur locale. But there are some things I want to know from you, the players: - Does it give the impression of a real floating city? Is it full enough? Does it need more boats? - Is it not too dark, can you play it on your monitor in daylight? - Do you like the routes to the bases? - How is the distribution of the weapons? - I feel some of the boats need something to distinguish themselves, to be more recognisable. Any ideas? All other suggestions are welcome as well. Quote
[WR] SkiZZor Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 I think you're going to have to increase the ambient lighting for the map. It probably looked alright for you in the game because you have your gamma settings higher than normal. The screenshots that you took are representative of normal Nolf2 gamma, and it looks realllly dark. Why hide such a nice map? Quote
Genesis Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Anyway it looks very original. It reminds me of a certain NOLF1 map, I can't remember its name. Oh, it doesn't look like yours, it's just that I love maps with water / lava / etc... Apart from that, I'd say that the restaurants look a bit empty at the moment. A few paintings or "estampes", maybe? I don't remember the english word for that, but I'm sure you're gonna get it. About your boats... Maybe you could use other wood textures. The original one is great for buildings, but it's not detailled enough for small things. Planks are too wide, for example. We could make them smaller, add some detail, and change the gamma to get a more exotic-looking wood. If you need help with that, just ask me. P.S.: If you don't mind, I'm gonna mirror your .rez file on my site, because no-one will be patient enough to download it at 1,15kB/s. That's the problem with free hosts I'll post the link as soon as possible. Quote
Belladonna Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 *raises hand* I was an impatient one. After 30 minutes with it only at 6% I turned it off. So not having seen it really, I still agree with the others based on the screenshots... lighten it up some. Never did like playing in the dark. If it's supposed to be night, put in some lanterns on some of the boats maybe? To individualize them, maybe paint jobs on some of them, flags of some type, rugs on the inside, various contents inside/outside? I'm looking forward to actually seeing it. Quote
Eliteone Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Maybe UnityHQ can host a mappers testing server if enough mappers would make use of it Quote
Factor Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 coolio... i just finished a DE (demolition) map for nolf2... of course it can only be used with Bahamut_Zero's Mod though... and ya Goo...its way too dark...it looks a little ok inside the houses and stuff cuz u got all the lights in there so it lightens it up a bit...but outside...its way too dark... hop AmbientLight up about 10 and a few ideas on boats to distinguish themselves... (im sure uve thought of a few of these) -you could stick HARM and UNITY stuff on them ie.( blue/red arrows...harm/unity signs... - you could put country flags on there...like north and south korea, or stuff like that... - you could make them into merchant ships...(just an idea...no specifics...RUN WITH THE IDEA!) Quote
Genesis Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 There we go! You can download Goo's map HERE (286kBps, it's a bit better ) I still have much room if anybody else wants to host or mirror any kinda map, mod, etc. PM me at will. And eh... i just finished a DE (demolition) map for nolf2... of course it can only be used with Bahamut_Zero's Mod though... YEEEEEEHAAAA! A DM MAP! If enough people made enough DM maps, we REALLY should think about creating a server for Bahamut's mod. For those who never played CJ, Demolition is the BEST mod ever. It would be a great opportunity to change our habits! Quote
Genesis Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Okay I played it a few minutes. The map definitely looks great, and will be fun once finished. No problem regarding weapon locations and balance between the teams. BUT... if ever you fall in the water, (which is likely to happen very often) how on earth do you jump out? I tried to hop on each and every boat, no way. Goo, you really should add stairs on the restaurants' sides and make a few boats lower. Now, the visual aspect is ok, but as we said above, it's a bit empty. These walls could certainly use a few paintings and posters. Oh, and yes, the gamma settings are a wee bit too dark. Is there a way to add a lighting source, such as full moon or something? Sorry, I never tried creating maps for NOLF2... Quote
Factor Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 ya gen, what its called is Ambient Lighting... a level to make a bit brighter is about 50 - 60... that should be nice, of course im not 100% sure since i play around with nolf1 dedit more than nolf2 so i could be wrong... but its just Ambient Lighting (which a few have already suggested)... he just needs to raise it a tiny bit... and what ur suggesting for a moon or sumthing...that would make him have to edit the sky and all this stuff...and that isnt easy...so its better to just keep the sky as it is...just turn up ambient a tiny bit... and goo, dont take my number of 50-60...cuz im sure urs is way lower ( i think)...like i said, thats more for nolf1... just raise it about 10 Quote
[TNT] Sonic Goo Posted July 18, 2005 Author Posted July 18, 2005 I think I set the ambient lighting the same as the Japan mission that's available as an lta file, since I'm using the same night sky and stuff. I'll check if I changed that, and try to make it lighter. As for the download... I tried hosting it at fileshack, but they're upgrading their services, so no go. Then I tried the other options mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but they don't have any direct upload feature I could find, you have to send them a mail. Then I went to freewebs, only to find that my name was already taken there... by me! So now it's up there, at my old Freewebs account. Since the first maps I made were lavishly designed, but had a framerate of about zero, I thought I'd be a bit more careful this time. I've already found a bunch of custom textures I want to use, but right now I haven't got the right graphics program to turn them into the file format DEdit likes. I've been using the nightlights (lampions) instead of arrows, seemed more suitable. And I've been using the Indian rice bags to function as cargo. Maybe some more of that? And, Gen, if you have some nice Chinese wood textures, mail them! btw - there are ways to get out of the water onto the boats, just look for some anchoring chains... Quote
Genesis Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 Ah, anchoring chains... how could I not think about that? Quote
Old Salt Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I loaded "Hopeless in Hong Kong" into my Custom/Resources folder, but the game doesn't recognize it. "No Doomsday maps loaded". How do I enter it? Thanks Genesis for hosting Sonic's download. It took me 5 1/2 min. Quote
{U}Sgt.PEPPER Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 cool map i like it,heres some constructive criticism i had a hard time getting on some of the boats from the water (a invisible step) would fix it or lowerthe boats a few units or raise the water it could use a few more guns\armor\health change some not all boat textures to a darker or lighter woodcolor and or color them ,just so they all don't look the same that would make it easyer to fine things like armmor\etc. and don't forget to finish your doorways/doorframes [opional] it will just look better over all nice work! Quote
criminalcola Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Very nice map. Just make sure you take time on it. When I first got hooked on mapping I would make a map in a hour then try and get everyone to play it. lol Quote
[TNT] Sonic Goo Posted August 1, 2005 Author Posted August 1, 2005 I'll make the anchor chains a bit bigger so they're easier to recognise. And I'll add a few more (raising the water level will make the boats fill with water.) And, yeah Gen, where's that wood you promised? (btw - it will take at least a few more weeks to finish it since I don't have a graphics program to do my custom textures.) Quote
[FF5]Knix Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 And, yeah Gen, where's that wood you promised? dirty dirty knix... Quote
Factor Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 lmao! that was a good one, o and goo, i really liked Pepper's criticism on the boats, they r a little too plain, so i dont know, maybe thats what u need with the wood textures or sumthing?...i dunno, but they need to be different than each other sum how...cuz it makes it harder to find stuff... Quote
[TNT] Sonic Goo Posted August 1, 2005 Author Posted August 1, 2005 If anyone has any ideas on how to decorate them diffently so they'll have a better sense of place, just let me know. Quote
Factor Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 u could throw the pretty little rugs u find in the japan textures over top of them... there r HUNDREDS of rugs in the japan levels, also some in india, so u could throw those over top...not coverin the full wood of course, just like, a stripe through it, cuz u dont want it lookin like the roof of the boat is made from carpet Quote
[FF5]Knix Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 The boats in Hong Kong are called "Junks". I actually was on one when I was there back in '86. Here are some pics that maybe will help...... Quote
[TNT] Sonic Goo Posted August 2, 2005 Author Posted August 2, 2005 I actually have some custom rugs I'm planning to use in the restaurants, for the ships I think some sort of cargo would work best. And I have seen those ships, I just decided to make lots of cheapo small ones - saves a lot of time and effort. Quote
Guest Doffy90 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 the map is cool but the water looks awfull lol dunno if u could do anything with that tho and there way too many boats Quote
[TNT] Sonic Goo Posted August 17, 2005 Author Posted August 17, 2005 What exactly is wrong with the water? And having lots of boats is sortof the idea... Quote
