Are you saying Europe is supporting this shield? I doubt most leaders will be happy with provoking the Russians like this. They're still too dependent on their energy...

Anyway, the funny bit about this is that it's supposed to protect us from nukes from Korea or Iran. And they're building it in Poland. Do they really think Putin is that stupid?

There used to be a treaty banning this sort of thing, which the US broke by building this. Russia responded with diplomatic language back then, but deeds speak louder than words and the development of shield-piercing ICBMs now is an escalation from their side.

The deeper reason behind this is that Russia has never been happy with losing its' sphere of influence in Eastern Europe. They're now very much integrated in the EU, with millions of Poles, Czechs and others moving West. Even former Soviet republics would rather deal with the EU than Russia, which is responding with force and manipulation instead. You can see it in other recent events like blackmailing Georgia on energy, the riots in Estonia, and other attempts to increase its' influence in neighbouring countries. And internally from the suspicious deaths of critical journalists, aggressive repression of any kind of protests, etc. And then there's the spy game that's on again, with British diplomats accused of spying and the Litvinenko affair. Partly by choice and party forced by circumstances, Russia is becoming more autocratic internally and more antagonistic externally.

At least the Bond writers will be glad to have their favourite bad guys back.

One of Putin's favorite sports is the martial art of judo. Putin began sambo (a Soviet martial art developed for the Red Army and NKVD) at the age of 14, before switching to judo, which he continues to study today.[50] Putin won competitions in his hometown of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), including the senior championship of Leningrad. He is the President of the Yawara Dojo, the same St. Petersburg dojo he studied at as a youth. Putin co-authored a book on his favorite sport, published in Russian as Judo with Vladimir Putin and in English under the title Judo: History, Theory, Practice.[51]

Though he is not the first world leader to practice judo, Putin is the first leader to move forward in the advanced levels. Currently, Putin is a black belt (6th dan) and is best known for his Harai Goshi, a sweeping hip throw.[52] Vladimir Putin is Master of Sports (Soviet and Russian sport title) in Judo and Sambo. After a state visit to Japan, Putin was invited to the Kodokan Institute and showed the students and Japanese officials different judo techniques.[52]

Bush attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts where he played baseball, but "mostly made his mark as a cheerleader for the teams".[9]
