opening .dat files

6 posts in this topic

I'm learning basics of modding, and I have one problem. I'd like to open one of a game levels, but I simply don't know how. I opened "NOLF" archive, exported "level.dat" file... and don't know how to open, or convert it. I suppose that Dedit is used for editing it, but it opens only it's own files... So, anyone knows?

Noesis Tutorial

Noesis is a tool for extracting game assets from a number of gamesincluding Duke Nukem Forever and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.1)Download and run Noesis.exe.
2) Open the game content and locate the .dat files.

3) Double click on a .dat file and you will be prompted to extract it.

4) After the extract is finished, you can browse and preview the .msh files.
– Note: You may be prompted to select .skl or .def files, you can click cancel to these messages.

5) The model can now be exported to a number of formats (File > Export).
– Most models will not export with textures, you will need to manually find and export them.

Still doesn't work. Using Noesis I can open .rez files, export the DATs, but cannot open them. There must be a way, as there are modder - made missions and so...

EDIT: I found a plug- in for Noesis, with it the files can be opened.

EDIT 2: Some files can be opened. I opened one mod (PI Granny), but can't open another or original game files.

EDIT 3: As I opened the world, I can only see the model. I wonder, how player spawn place, opponents, weapons etc. are coded. Surely in .dat file... but Noesis can't see them.

As far as i know you cant decompile world files.

Monolith did release the source file to the second level as part of the SDK. You can find it under worlds.

This is a lot better than some of Monoliths other games like F.E.A.R which didnt include any single player source files
