blue Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 i was talking to frylock earlier, and he was asking me if games and programs would work if he installed them on an external hard drive. i told him they would, but im not completely sure how well they would run (im not sure if usb2.0 or firewire would work fast enough). i've got an external enclosure with a 250 gig HD but for the most part i just use it to back up important files. i was wondering if anyone knows or actually does this with their external hd's. i'd reformat my master hd more often if it weren't for the annoying process of re-installing programs, games, etc, etc. anyone care to shed some light or experience on this matter? {GD}Independent Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 i'd reformat my master hd more often if it weren't for the annoying process of re-installing programs, games, etc, etc. You'd still have to reinstall the games to get them integrated into your Windows install. The installation routines make all sorts of registry entries, etc. USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps (megaBITS per second) whereas ATA133 has a rate of 1064Mbps, so I'd have to guess the game would be pretty slow from a USB drive. Only one way to find out! Quote
