The rights to the Nolf series is tied up between at least two different companies. http://kotaku.com/the-sad-story-behind-a-dead-pc-game-that-cant-come-back-1688358811
-
The rez files need to be in their own folder below the custom one.

-
At least with these older games any reasonable build from budget to high-end is going to run the NOLF games exceedingly weill.

You can double check your drivers using Intel's driver update utility at http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html. I imagine you're using the latest driver, but it never hurts to check just in case the driver shipped with your laptop wasn't completely ready for your version of Windows.

(Moved to the NOLF 2 Technical Help forum for better visibility).
You might try disabling hardware sound in the launcher. Sometimes that helps.
If that doesn't work try running the game as an Administrator. NOLF 2 might need that to access the sound system properly.

Well I'm having no luck so far on Win 8.1 - It just won't launch and I've tried all the updates, running it as admin, compatibility mode. I'll try the multiplayer launcher but I really only wan't to play the story mode.
@FortranDragon what compaitbility fix are you referring to? I can't see anything like that in the downloads section, unless you just mean the patches?
EDIT: OK Well the multiplayer laucher does manage to launch the game but as it loads I get the MFC Applcation has stopped working error...arrgh I've been at this for hours and so close, an others have it running so why can't I get it going?
EDIT2: Interestingly I have 2 monitors and dual graphics cards, I noticed both screens would filcker and go black one after the other while launching just before the MFC error. On a hunch I disconnected the second monitor, now the game runs fine!
The "compatibility fix" I was thinking about is actually this one http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=112, the Fix for Mouse Stutter & Framerate. The installed file is names NOLFCompatFix.sdb so that's why I remember it as the compatibility fix. Sorry for an confusion.
I run the game with dual monitors, but a single graphics card. I guess it is the combination of two cards and two monitors that is the issue. (Especially if you have SLI or Crossfire enabled for other games)

Actually there is, Technical Support > NOLF 1 Technical Help.
I've moved your thread to the appropriate forum for you.I have it running on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. I have the GotY edition, but patching it to 1.3 should be the same. I run it as an administrator, use the compatibility fix and the multiplayer launcher.
-
I dont understand why I should use the GOTY version from your dowlnoads if I already have mine and as far as i know the 32-bit installer is supposed to the same as the GOTY-installer? The Launcher didn't help btw.
A common cause is when the d3d.ren file is corrupted. Recopying that file from your discs might fix the problem. Also, doing a reinstall from the download EliteOne mention would also let you know if your discs have a bad spot.

Looks good. I like seeing the technical support forums in their own subgroup. Hopefully it will make it more visually distinct for the new member / casual forum goer where that information is at.

Is the Carbine available to you in the weapons selection screen when you start the mission?
-
So NOLF2 runs on windows 10? Or do you need additional program(s)?
It works in Windows 10. Here's a link to the steps I took to get it running when I needed to reinstall the game: http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2495&page=3#entry104234.
-
I have the Game of the Year edition, so that might make a difference. As far as the launcher goes, I just press play when it comes up. I don't bother to refresh the servers. Doing that takes me right to the Single Player menu option in the game itself.

From another post of mine: "One gotcha I had is with the NOCD patch. The patch thinks the game is at <x>:\Program Files\Fox\No One Lives Forever 2\ when the game is actually at <x>:\Program Files (x86)\Fox\No One Lives Forever 2\. Once I backed up the retail Lithtech.exe I simply moved the NOCD version to the correct folder. After that I could run the game without CD 1 being in the drive."
You might check to see if the NOCD patch you used did something similar.
EDIT: I moved your post and the thread to the NOLF 2 tech support forum.

It is compatible with Windows 10. (I'm using 64-bit Pro, a 980 GTX, and an I5-3470, for reference.)
I reinstalled it today to fix the same 'Invalid cshell.dll' errors others have gotten.
My steps were:
1) Edited the registry and deleted all of the "No One Lives Forever 2" entries. (Note: only do this is you comfortable editing your registry. Messing up your registry can completely break Windows.)
2) Installed the game. I installed from the CDs I own, but the CDs from the download should work.
3) Installed the 1.3 patch. Then ran the game (with CD 1 still in the drive) and configured my video settings.
4) Installed the Widescreen mod. Ran the game again to set my widescreen settings.
5) Installed the NOCD patch (see 'gotcha' below).
6) Installed both UnityHQ map packs (DM & DD).
7) Installed URA's multiplayer launcher.
One gotcha I had is with the NOCD patch. After that I could run the game without CD 1 being in the drive.
I'm having game crashes when I try to connect to a server, so I still need to sort that part out. I will edit this post when I have that part figured out, but at least I know I can play the base game.
EDIT: Ok, I have multiplayer working.
8) Installed the LivesForever mod (needed for the UnityHQ server).
9) Installed the LivesForeverPlus mod (might be needed for other servers).
10) Changed the properties for NOLF2.exe under the Compatibility tab to be "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7' and checked 'Run this program as an administrator'.
11) Changed the properties for Lithtech.exe under the Compatibility tab to be "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)' and checked 'Run this program as an administrator'.
After that I was able to connect to the UnityHQ DoomsDay server, complete a map and see it switch maps successfully multiple times.
I left the compatibility modes for each .exe in steps 10 and 11 as their defaults. I did try different modes, but I would get error messages when I exited the game. (Mostly the 'did this program run right; error message.)
Two notes:
The first is if you are playing the single player campaign make sure LivesForever and LivesForeverPlus aren't active. Those mods occasionally put you in an unwinnable state in the game. Unwinnable as in you can't reload an older save and complete the part of the game that is giving you trouble.
Secondly, you might need adjust your mouse sensitive way down inside the game. My Razer DeathAdder is very touchy until I turn the game's mouse sensitivity down to zero.
-
I have it running on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. If I remember right, I did use the compatibility fix, plus I am using the Multiplayer launcher to run the game.
-
Christmas Gift everyone, as my grandmother used to say.

-
You will get 10 Pro as the free upgrade from Ultimate (There being no Windows 10 Ultimate edition.) See http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq for the details.

Unfortunately, it isn't going to happen: http://kotaku.com/the-sad-story-behind-a-dead-pc-game-that-cant-come-back-1688358811 .

It has been years since I used VS6, so I would suggest trying the options first as a normal user. If that doesn't work you might run VS6 as an administrator to see if that allows the source code to be compiled. Given that many people ran NT/2000/XP as an administrator that might be what is stopping the source from compiling.
-
Some suggestions are here: http://forums.techarena.in/software-development/1412784.htm. It isn't VS6, but VS7 should be close enough to give you some stuff to try.
-
Kudos to everyone that has stepped up and helped out. It's nice to know that when things are tough for anyone of us the rest of the community will reach out and keep this game series going.

-
My most favorite dialog scene is the one where you hear "You look like you need a monkey." It was so unexpectedly funny for me that I knew at that moment I'd need to play the whole game to see everything.
Another favorite scene is when Cate meets Goodman for the first time. For a shooter it was wonderfully adult and time-period appropriate without being overwrought. I know most shooter fans didn't like the long cutscenes, but as a fan of RPGs I love all the snappy dialogue and character development.
-
Wobak's WideScreen mod in the downloads section may be what you are looking for. URA's NOLF 1 Launcher also includes the additional screen resolutions.
That said, there isn't anyway to change the game to 64-bit, per se without recompiling the source code. It is still a 32-bit app running on a 64-bit app. (Also, the bpp in your screen resolution still maxes out at 32 bpp which a different number of bits than your cpu and/or OS is using. 32bpp indicates how much color is associate with each pixel you see on the screen.)

I edited it to just put in an explicit link. The link tool doesn't seem to like me tonight.

Why is NOLF not available on Steam?
in General NOLF Topics
Posted
I know. This is one game series that needs to be available again on Gog / Steam / etc. Since System Shock made there is still a possibility that Nolf might make it some time in the future.
