Then it's a good thing me using Inspection mode and doing a "hacky hack" partly fixes it.

It's is good you found a solution, but I'd be trying to figure out what I was doing with my browser to cause it to break on a website rather than telling people they need to fix their website if no one else was reporting issues with the same browser I use. ^_^ At a minimum I'd try to use a different browser, especially one with no addons, to see if that was the issue. But I used to be a programmer so I know the issue can just as easily be on my end as the other one. Eliminating all the possibilities on my side is the first step to trying to figure out what is actually going on.

I'm using an GeoForce RTX 4070 Ti card and having same issues.

I have a Geforce RTX 3080 Ti. Both of my monitors are GSync Premium ones. I had to use DGVoodoo2 to make the game display work correctly.

My problem issue is that Windows treats my monitors differently than the BIOS does. That is, the BIOS sees the right monitor as #1, but Windows sees it as #2. So when I would launch the game (without DGVoodoo2) one monitor would get the startup window -- what you see in your screenshot -- and then put the actual game display on the other monitor. That was a mess because you never knew which monitor was going to respond to the mouse. Since these older games were coded with the assumption of one monitor and one 3D graphics card (even SLI setups were seen as one card from what I remember) things get weird when setups aren't that way. At least on my system, DGVoodoo2 is presenting a setup that matches the assumptions of the game.

All of which is a long-winded way of saying it gets hard to debug these problems since all of our computers have different setups. Isolating the differences that are causing the issue starts to be almost impossible when trying it remotely via the website and/or Discord. :sigh:

  3. That Geforce GTX 460 is a 12+ year old card with only 1 gig of RAM. It was Nvidia's first DX11 card so I wonder if there's something with it that more modern cards Directx 12 capable cards don't have. It wouldn't be the first time that a programmer built software that was making assumptions based on the hardware they used. ^_^ Too bad you don't have access to a newer video card to see if that fixes the issue. (The 400 series tended to run hot which isn't good for any electronic part over the long term.)

BTW, I am making this post with the latest version of Chrome ("Version 113.0.5672.127 (Official Build) (64-bit)") and have had zero problems with the website.

  4.

Nvidia announced support for RTX for classic games and mods today. The system is called RTX Remix.

What's neat about the demo is that Morrowind was their main example.  Morrowind is of the same vintage as Nolf 2, so here's hoping that the folks in the Nolf 2 community who keep the game alive and running for us now have some cool new tools to play with. :)

  5. Here's the link to the official announcement.

A bit of background: one of the issues muddling up the rights to the Nolf series is that Activision-Blizzard (ATVI) may or may not still have some rights or claim on the series. No has been able to pay ATVI enough to motivate them to search through all of their old paper documents to see what is actually ATVI's legal situation vis-à-vis Nolf.

Now, with Microsoft buying Activision-Blizzard (ATVI), I hope this makes it a bit easier for someone to see what IPs ATVI actually holds. (ATVI's history goes back the Atari 2600 so they likely have a lot of IP still in their possession.) So here's to the buyout passing regulatory muster and actually helping clear up some of the legal issues surrounding the Nolf series. Yeah, this is a major helping of wishful thinking, but the Nolf situation is so murky that events like this at least give us a chance to hope for a better legal situation, one where Nolf could be legally remastered and released.

  6. While searching for an answer to a different post, I ran across this book excerpt ("DirectX 9 Audio Exposed: Interactive Audio Development") about DirectMusic and some of the process used to make the dynamic music in Nolf 1. Here is the link to the excerpt: DirectMusic and the Production Process.

I realize this is likely to be a niche topic even among Nolf players since it is at the technical level. That said, I'm always interested is seeing how folks worked around the limitations of DirectX 7 to make something so amazing for the times. (It is also good to preserve links to sources various parts of the development of one of our favorite games.)

No problems with NOLF1 and NOLF2 using RTX 3070 and Wiindows 11 with modernizer mod

CJ crashes, cant extract files with the tools , so Im looking for a solution to at least get the textures and models for NOLF2

How were you installing it? I was able to install CJ and the tools from the original discs (version 1.0 of the game) without an issue. Were you doing the same or using a different source?

  8. I wonder how many are like me -- though I started after the peak times of the games -- and mostly lurk due to real life issues. It also doesn't help that it isn't console-simple to get the games running again. The mess with the rights really holds back a nostalgia re-release for modern systems. :sigh:

  9. I had no problems with Nolf1 on Windows 11. I was using DGVoodoo2 (v2.75.1 -- the latest when I posted this) and the Modernizer mod. I'll need to run through the whole game to see if there are any unexpected gotchas, but it loads and works.

Note: You may need to adjust your display settings the first time. The game didn't like the defaults, but setting things closer to my native resolution worked.

Note: My Windows 11 Pro install was an upgrade from Windows 10 Pro. I mention it as that might make a difference for someone else.

  10. You can search for "youtube to mp3". There are a number of websites and apps that will take a Youtube URL, extract the sound, and download the resulting MP3 to your computer.(I'm leaving off a link to any specific website as these things tend to come and go.)

  11. Here's the Nolf 2 soundtrack in one complete track. You can always download it with a youtube to mp3 converter. The video portion does list the soundtracks, but unfortunately there aren't any timestamps.

At least this will let you listen to the game music until you can find a version with the tracks separated.

  12. I've never seen anything official that the Lithtech engine was GPLed. Unfortunately without something from Monolith / LithTech / Touchdown / etc it is best to assume the version floating around isn't legally GPLed. :/

The safest thing to do would be to contact Monolith and ask them about the status of the engine license. All the links I've been able to find ultimately refer back to a post make here stating the engine was GPLed. Given that post has nothing to establish the legality of the relicensing (a text file in the source code is not sufficient as that can be faked:/) it is an area to be very careful about.
