  1. Oh wow, I thought GOG gave up on this due to WB, Activision and Fox dicking around.

If NOLF does get a remaster a la Turok, I’d be estatic. I still have persistent troubles with stuttering on NOLF 1, only reducing it to manageable levels. If Night Dive secured the rights and did a remaster to get it running smoothly on Windows 10 at widescreen with good performance, it’d bring so many new fans to the series.

Win 10 Pro on SSD drive etc.   This is the oldest game too it's like 18 years old.

Well that should be similar to mine, then, though I did install my copy on a mechanical hard drive rather than my SSD C: drive.

Let me know how your copy goes. What setup did you have before with NOLF and how did it work then?

I'll be tweaking things over the weekend so I'll post my results for everyone.

Alright thanks. You're also using a Windows 10 system, right?

It's strange. Out of all the LithTech engine games I own, this is the only one that's having these issues. NOLF2 runs fine. Contract JACK, though I didn't play much, runs fine. AVP2 runs fine. Medal of Honor Pacific Assault runs fine, and that wasn't even a Monolith game. So I'm baffled why this particular game is giving me so much trouble.

not yet though I haven't play it much yet as I'm still setting up my new machine.

Yeah, sorry I ended up editing the prior post rather than just making a new one, but the main point I've made still is the same. All the fixes I've made for NOLF simply mitigates the mouse problems that the game has, whereas AVP2 flat out doesn't have them, and the easiest way to see the problem is to let the game run at super high framerates and test the mouse movement there. Since you've obviously played these games the most out of anyone I ever knew, you're the best source at telling me how these games should run on modern hardware. Thank you.

On my new machine I am finding I have to play it in windowed mode or else it seems to cap my Nvidia 1060 to no more than 60 FPS

I'm playing it in windowed mode at the moment, though I'm still having those odd issues. It just gets worse as the framerate increases. You don't have those problems at a high framerate?

EDIT: Also, I've been trying to use the GOTY ISOs to see if that fixes stuff, but like here:

I'm having the same issue regarding older installation. Unfortunately, I don't have an XP machine handy to get around it like this person in the thread did.

I'm just wondering now if that actually helps at all, and what your experience is with this stuff. I know for a fact that regardless of what fix I implement, if I remove any framerate cap, the mouse will be very jittery and often refuse to move at all, even though the game is running at a massively huge framerate. If I turn using the keyboard, it looks very smooth, but if I try turning with the mouse, it'd constantly shake, or often be stuck for a while before suddenly moving again. Capping it at 60FPS makes the mouse move more or less correctly, but the stutter feeling is still there. I'm just now wondering if you'll have similar issues at that high framerate or if your game works perfectly fine regardless. If you end up having similar issues, then I guess my current set up is the best it's gonna get. If not, then I want to figure out what's going on with my copy.

Sorry for the massive wall of text, but I wanted to give out as much information as possible. The TL;DR is basically to turn off any VSync, GSync or framerate limiter and see how the game plays when it's, like, 500 FPS or something. The Advanced Field Training section at the start of Santa's Workshop is the most prone to the type of mouse glitches I have.

Weird cause I downloaded them a couple nights ago to my new PC and didn't have any problems.

What browser were you downloading with?

Vivaldi, which is based on Chrome. Could be that that's the issue. I do also have Microsoft Edge installed normally.

That being said, the problem really isn't the download anymore, as TheISOZone's version of the files seem fine. Now, as mentioned in another thread, I'm unable to uninstall it on Windows 10. I've learned to just try and deal with it. Seems like the stuff I've done, which was using dgVoodoo2, adding the mouse fixes, and limiting my framerate to 60FPS has made it mostly playable, though it's still not perfect.

I'm just wondering if you also have that issue, and if it's something that affects all copies of NOLF 1 these days. I notice that it gets especially bad if the framerate is ludicrously high. For instance, if I turn off VSync and framerate limits entirely, I can get like 500 frames per second and the mouse flat out will not move a lot of times. The strange thing is I get this issue at super high framerates in NOLF1, but I don't have that issue at all in Aliens vs. Predator 2 despite it using an identical engine. At that high framerate, I just have the usual problems of dialogue and scripted events all going way too fast, but the mouse is still highly smooth. So I dunno.

  7. So I found the GOTY ISO files to try and reinstall NOLF 1 to see if adding all these mouse fixes there will be more effective, but I can't seem to uninstall the NOLF copy I have. I tried uninstalling through the ISO, which gives me an error and quits. I tried looking for an uninstaller in the NOLF installed folder but only found an icon. Then I tried deleting all registry entries relating to it, but that's still not working.

    Anyone know what's going on?

Do you have any information I can put with that DLL (was there a readme file?)

The ISOs here are from one of my copies of the GOTY so they are the actual media.

Not really, I’m afraid. There’s just the file and the file name on the site.

As for your ISOs, could you upload them in an alternate source as well? Maybe Mediafire or MEGA? I can download other stuff off this site just fine, but it seems like the ISOs just keep stopping mid-download.

  9. 29 minutes ago, Eliteone said:

Thanks for that. I have had more success with the GOTY edition on Windows 10 and newer hardware.

Hm, is there an alternate source I can download the GOTY ISOs? I found the ones on TheISOZone, but they seem to be smaller in size than what you have so I'm not sure if their version is missing anything or not.

I did find this, though: https://www.myabandonware.com/game/the-operative-no-one-lives-forever-7q4 (uploading that file as well)

I don't know if it's a placebo or not, but it seems like this file most mitigates the problem. I still feel like it's not perfect, but it feels playable now based on what little I've played so far. I still use dgVoodoo2 and mouse smoothing, but all of that combined with this seems to fix the problem for me. Will still want to reinstall the game at some point, though. I'm starting to see black bars in the menu as well, even though the game itself seems to look fine.

EDIT: I do think this has been pretty effective. Tested one of the more prominent areas that stutter, which was Santa's lab training areas, and using this alongside mouse smoothing is the most effective so far at mitigating the problem for me. It seems perfectly playable now, so I think this file might be worth adding to the other mouse fixes for those who want it. In the meantime, I'm gonna download the GOTY ISOs from TheISOZone and reinstall NOLF1 to see if that further fixes anything. Thanks a lot for your help. It's been getting closer and closer to fully playable for me.

    dinput.dll

  10. It's been a while, so I'm bumping this thread again because I'm still having issues with mouse stutter. Again, I can mitigate it using dgVoodoo2 and mouse smoothing, but it still feels off. NOLF 2 performs absolutely fine with no problem, so it's weird why NOLF 1 keeps persisting with these issues. I wonder if anyone else has these problems.

EDIT: As an update to this, it seems like the NOLF Server launcher flat out does not work on my PC at all. It flat out will not launch the game. I'm gonna try to download the GOTY ISO files and reinstall the game, then reinstall the launcher, though I'm having problems with the ISOs stopping mid-download. Could be due to the spotty internet.

Thanks for the help, nevertheless, though. Sent $5 your way. Hope that helps at least a little.

  11. Old post now, but I never had any issues with stutter on AVP2 once I simply ran it in windowed mode, so it should be fine.

I'm mainly bumping this thread because I was wondering if the mouse stutter and FPS fix only works if you have an installation of the game in your registry. I've recently transferred computers and my NOLF files aren't inside the registry. The game still works fine, though, because I'm using a no CD crack that launches it with no problem. However, installing the NOLFCompatFix.sdb file seems to not be working and the only thing that seems to mitigate the stutter is using dgVoodoo2 and then putting mouse smoothing to max. It's playable in this state, but I wonder if the dedicated fix is better, and also if I'm installing it wrong.

    Thank you.

Agreed but only copies you can find on ebay or amazon are used now.

Yeah. I do occasionally find old games for sale from the thrift stores in my area, so there's a chance they might appear. I found old copies of Battlefield 1942 and Call of Duty 4 there, among others. Hopefully I might get lucky and find a legit copy of NOLF 1 and 2 there.

At least fans are preserving them.

  13. I'm having the same issue. I used both the WeaponTest and Multiplayer Launcher to get widescreen and it crashes every time. The one time I switched to 1920x1080 from the menu, the menu formatting is messed up and it's cut off.

The Wobaks widescreen (sp?) for NOLF2 doesn't have this problem, although the widescreen patch that came with LiveForeverPlus, I think it was, did have this issue. Tried using the other one but since it was designed for NOLF2, not Contract JACK, it doesn't load.

So there's really nothing that works for Contract JACK to get proper widescreen for me.

  14. I'm on Windows 10 (with all the updates) and recently reinstalled NOLF2. However, I'm having a weird bug where if I run the LiveForeverPlus mod, picking up bodies doesn't put me in the "move body" state where my weapon disappears and I'm moving the body. The body just disappears and I can't put it down unless I aim at another body. This issue isn't there if I don't run the mod, and I'm able to play the game fine without it, but I'm wondering if that's just some weird hitch with my version of the mod or if it's commonplace.

I'm not too miffed about it as I don't play much NOLF2 multiplayer, and the single player seems to work fine, but I'm just curious.

  15. If you'd like to write it up (The steps for DGVoodoo2) We'd be glad to feature it :)

    Alright, I'll write it here:

    To install DGVoodoo 2:

    1. Download the files from http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2_53.zip (there might be a false flagging by anti-virus software but it isn't a virus).

    2. When downloaded, there are two folders (MS and 3Dfx) and the dgVoodoo.exe file.

    3. Because NOLF1 is Direct3D, copy all the files in the MS folder (D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll) into the NOLF folder holding the Lithtech.exe file. Copying DGVoodoo.exe isn't necessary.

    4. Open DGVoodoo.exe and click the Add button. Navigate to the folder you put all the files in and hit Select Folder.

    5. Now there will be a specific profile for NOLF that you can fiddle around under the DirectX tab.

That should fix all the issues, though there are a few things to keep in mind.

"Disable and passthru to real DirectX" will disable the emulation and cause it to not function.

Forcing bilinear filtering and linear mip filtering could cause some artifacting on letters.

Antialiasing caused some not insigificant frame drops for me, so use with caution.

I have Force VSync on which I don't know if it was what fixed the issue, but I have it on with no problems.

I don't know what Apply Phong Shading is, but I have it on with no problems either.

Fast video memory access and bilinear blit stretch gave me weird artifacts in Splinter Cell, but that's a different game on a different engine to NOLF. I kept them off just in case.

Obviously, turn off the dgVoodoo watermark so it doesn't ugly up the game.

And that's about it as far as I know. All I know is I put the files in there and now the issues have mostly been resolved. The fps jerkiness from pop up menus is gone and while there are still framedrops for using the scope, the framedrops are significantly smaller, dropping merely to 60fps from my usual monitor refresh rate of 75 Htz. Mouse smoothing still needs to be maxed out and the game still needs to be run in Windowed mode for maximum smoothness, but now it's completely playable. The only issue at the moment is that Alt Tab seems to cause my game to crash.

    As a side note:

To get Borderless Windowed (basically faked Fullscreen look):

    1. Download Borderless Gaming from here: https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming then open the program

    2. Run NOLF1 in Windowed mode.

    3. Select NOLF from the Applications Window and move it to Favorites, which will automatically make the game borderless as soon as it launches.

    4. The Borderless Gaming program can be hidden out of the way into the tray, so it can just run in the background and automatically make NOLF play like in Windowed mode but look Fullscreen

    5. The launcher might also be stretched out, which is awkward but not too big a deal, I think.

Being that this requires Alt Tabbing in order to set it up, it's a good idea to do this first and then do the dgVoodoo later as Alt Tabbing with dgVoodoo seems to crash the game.

Hope you got all that giant wall of text. lol

  16.

Not familiar with that site or what they may have done to the program.

Not sure of the legality of distributing it that way either.

I do know you can still buy the game via Amazon or Ebay

So their argument about it not being able to be purchased is incorrect.

Ah okay, well I will endeavor to try and grab a copy from that way then, though it's sad I can't easily grab a digital copy off GOG or something.

Either way, DGVoodoo2 seems to have fixed the issue so if someone in the future has issues, could tell them about that.

  17. I got the controls to save after uninstalling from the C: SSD drive that's on the laptop, and installed nolf2 on the D: HDD drive-which didn't work at first, so i just never bothered with it after that and just let it sit for a week. Today for the S&G's of it I plugged a different keyboard into the laptop and it started working. I don't know if that was the problem or not, but it fixed itself. All i had to do after that was re-assign the controls

Huh weird. I never had issues with that. lol

Right now my main problem is that NOLF1 has some odd performance bugs, such as somewhat jerky aiming (even with max mouse smoothing), fps drops with using the scope, and jerky movement with any pop up menus. Makes aiming difficult. Any idea what's going on there?

  18.

I have to run NOLF 1 in windowed mode on Windows 10. That seems to help. Might give that a try.

I tried that, but it didn't really help. Running in Windowed helped on Windows 8.1 along with fellow LithTech game AVP2, but it didn't seem to help with NOLF1 (bizzarely, AVP2 runs fine on fullscreen on Windows 10 for me).

EDIT: In case something I listed might explain some of the issues I'm having:

I installed the NOLF1 Revival copy that's bundled with the widescreen patch off http://nolfrevival.tk.

I'm using max settings on everything, running it at 1920x1080 and pushed texture resolution to max.

I run the game in Steam as a non-Steam game to check my framerate, but the laggy feeling exists even if I run the exe directly.

I tried using the compatibility settings with MS Compatibility Administrator which didn't really help. It might have helped make it somewhat playable, but the laggy feeling is still there and the framerate drops in both scopes and pop ups are still there.

Running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 8, 7, XP etc. didn't help, neither did Administrator.

    Windowed mode didn't really help.

I imported LithTech.exe into NVidia profiles to try and force VSync, framerate limits, and other stuff into the game. While it works at doing so, it didn't really help with the lag or framedrops.

Also, another bizarre thing: the game feels laggy when I bring up pop up menus (such as swapping ammo) but the Steam overlay claims I'm getting 100+ FPS (I normally keep VSync on, so the game is set at my monitor's refresh rate: 75FPS), so apparently my framerate is actually increasing, not decreasing.

The only thing that somewhat worked was boosting mouse smoothing to the absolute max, but even then, some laggy feeling exists. Like sometimes, I'd move the mouse but the crosshair itself wouldn't move, making lining up precise shots kind of difficult.

So yeah, I'm kind of at a loss here. :\

EDIT 2: I tried Windowed mode again with max mouse smoothing and that seems to be less jerky than max mouse smoothing with fullscreen. Still doesn't fix the scope drops or the pop up menu jerkiness but the core shooting feels tolerable now. At least for now. I wonder if DGVoodoo would work at solving some of these issues.

EDIT 3: Huh, DGVoodoo 2 seems to actually work. After I put the D3D files from DGVoodoo 2 into the game, put the game in Windowed mode and put mouse smoothing to max, now the game seems to run smooth enough and the framerate issues when popups occur no longer happen. Frame drops still occur with scopes, but the drops are significantly lower. Before, it'd normally be 75 FPS and drop to 40 FPS, now it's dropping only to 60FPS, which is perfectly playable. I'm not sure if it requires everything I mentioned, but right now the game seems playable. I even manage to make the Windowed mode borderless with the Borderless Gaming program. The only issue now is I think DGVoodoo doesn't play well with Alt Tab, so if I Alt Tab the game will crash. But otherwise, it's perfectly playable for me now. Thanks for the help and this might be worth noting for future people who have issues.
