  1. It's been a long long time since I've opened DEdit, but if I remember correctly you can use blockers and such to prevent the game from drawing what's behind a wall (good for framerates and such). That might help with this as well.

  2. I think part of the problem is that they picked Amsterdam. From what I have seen of Brits in Amsterdam, the word Amsterdam might bring back memories of the kind of things they got up to themselves on their visits there. Maybe if they'd picked Utrecht or The Hague responses might be different.

  3. This is why the game I work for bans all 3rd party software across the board.

From Cel's example I can see that it can make people visible through textures as well, so the question not as relevant, but could you make the characters bigger and easier to see that way as well? That kind of thing would definitely be cheating.

  4. Quick question: will the number one in the primaries always select the number two as running mate?

Because it seems to me that in the case of the democrats, their roles seem already defined. Obama the charismatic inspiring frontman, Clinton the competent well-connected VP. Front office and back office. Would be weird if it ended up the other way around, wouldn't it?

  5. That's a term I haven't heard in a while. It's not used that much these days, since all the fear mongering after 9/11 has worn off and people now realise that these fanatics are only a very small minority and it's not an entire culture they're at war with.

I can't watch the actual video, since I'm at work. Does someone have a transcript?

  6. Why are we talking about Bill Clinton? Looks like someone was seriously traumatised by that long nightmare of peace and prosperity.

Many would say that the BJs caused us to wage war in Bosnia to distract people from the Lewinsky scandal. I'm sure many innocents died in that war.

Considering that the Lewinsky scandal first broke on January 17, 1998 and the war in Bosnia started in 1992, NATO got involved in 1994 and it ended in 1995, I doubt that's what you mean. If you're referring to Operation Allied Force, that was a multilateral effort, the goals of which include no mention of miss Lewinsky. Remember: Hollywood movies are not always accurate representations of historical events.

As for Clinton missing Bin Laden, Clinton seems to have missed him by about an hour. Under Bush, they seem to have missed him by a day or more.

Like most information on Bin Laden, this isn't 'hard information', it's 'intelligence'. You will find a lot of those things in more serious magazines like Time, Economist, Harpers, etc. From one of those articles I remember an incident under Clinton where they had Bin Laden in their sights from an armed drone. They didn't kill him then since he was standing right next to a Saudi prince. Perhaps that's what they're referring to.

Can we get back to the topic now? I haven't really heard anything about the Republican candidates, for some reason. Is "none of the above" still in the lead?

  7. Well, coming from (and living in) a country thas has proportional representation and therefore coalition governments, I don't think compromise is necessarily a bad thing. In fact, people who are completely consistent and follow their principles through to the extreme (like the ones who "don't stop until five past twelve") seem rather scary to me...

  8. Wow, KG and I agree on something. Hillary strikes me as a mean power hungry woman (with ulterior motives) who will do anything necessary in order to get what she wants. I understand the appeal of the Clinton name to many democrats but she's changed her mind and herself so many times, pandering to what she thinks the majority want instead of sticking steadfast to whatever her real beliefs are. I doubt she even knows what she truly believes anymore.

Even if I was democrat, which I certainly am not, I wouldn't vote for Hillary. Aside from her stance on issues, as a person she totally turns me off. As a woman I find nothing appealing about her whatsoever. If we were to have a woman in the White House I would want it to be someone I admire or can at least respect.

Which leads to another question not yet asked: do people decide who to vote for on personality or policy? I can understand that the fact that a president has so much power, that people weigh in personality. But on the other hand it seems so shallow...

  9. The obvious solution would be not to care about winning/losing. Just relax, chat a bit, laugh maniacally at people caught in your glue, laugh hysterically at people hit by your electric darts, laught shadenfreudenly at people slipping on your nanas and don't forget a katana duel every now and then. :D

  10. I'm expecting the Democratic race to be between Obama and Clinton, of whom I like Obama best. Clinton has gotten her hands a bit too dirty in the last few years.

As for the Republican candidates, I don't see a clear favourite. Most seem to have one or two factors that would be a major handicap in the final race. I haven't been able to research it much, but as I understand it Mike Huckabee is the religious candidate. He supports creationism, for example.

Whether a woman should/could be elected shouldn't be an issue at all. Even fundamentalist muslim countries have elected women. If they can do it, then it shouldn't be an issue for the US, either. The same goes for the question whether someone's black, obviously.

As for the American system of elections, I think it needs a major overhaul. It's too sensitive to gerrymandering, corruption, corporate influence (the amounts of money needed to run are staggering) and it always throws up the same two parties. Proportional representation would eliminate many of those concerns, though I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

  11. Actually, since the next pres won't enter office until sometime in januari after the elections, he'll still complete the whole of 2008 as well. Barring scandal/pretzel issues, of course.
