  1. First off, sorry about not continuing this post as was my intention. Got crazy busy and next thing I know...boom here we are after searching the forum and having a "Oh s--t!" moment.

I will get back with this, teaching TAB, riffs, terminology, etc. Promise

To Goo- Don't know about the first guy, but obviously yes to the other 2 (Who coincidently were lefty like I am *scared*).

Thankfully only drummers are known to be the ones to spontaneously combust.

To Onyx- Thanks M8, appreciate the words of support. Yeah I am a strong believer that while harder, one is never to old to learn new things (those with dementia not included). Through a lot of frustration/trial and error, I feel I have moved up from "No officer nobody is being mutilated, I was just playing Stairway to Heaven" to "Holy crap I just memorized how to play 'One'...and it sounds like it too...just slower..with some muffles". I have also started listening to different types of music and bands that I did not listen to before, just to hear how the lead plays.

So it's very gratifying to teach yourself something and obtain a certain level of aptitude. I decided to hire another teacher after firing my first one after 3 lessons over a year ago. I figure that based on the time I have to play, I can't progress much further on my own. So my first lesson with the new teacher is tonight..we'll see.

My youngest son Griffin (5) likes the drums, so i bought him a starter 3 piece drum-set and a lesson book with CD...

    This one but blue

So let's hope he doesn't spontaneously combust.

    Regards to all

  2. That map is far out in a groovy sort of way. :)

    Remember to add...

The astroturf back yard (with visible seams).

'75 station wagon with the rear facing seats in the back.

Footballs for throwing at Jan swelling up her nose but good.

A surprise vist by Davey Jones of the Monkees (Marsha is his number 1 fan you know).

A tombstone for Robert Reed (Actor who played Mike Brady who ironically was a $3 bill in real life and died of AIDS).

As far as Trigger's "line the gang up on the stairs and look groovy" idea, you need to decide between early Brady Bunch vs. Late Brady Bunch (Does Dedit allow perms?)

  3. As I have taken up the guitar as a past time for around 6 months now, teaching myself from the bottom up, I thought it may be fun to show some basics for all of those who fall into one of these categories.

    1) Always wanted to learn guitar, but felt they were too old.

    2) Always wanted to learn guitar, but felt it was too hard.

    3) Think Guitar Hero and all the spinoffs of the game is same as playing guitar

All I am going to do is show you some easy basics of the guitar, and introduce some "riffs" for you to practice on your own...

Here is the anatomy of an acoustic and electric guitar...

    acoustic_anatomy.gifelectric_anatomy_small.gif

The acoustic guitars sound eminates from the hole in the body of the "soundhole" or "rosette".

The electric guitars sound eminates through a magnetic device called a "pick-up" which captures the vibrations of the strings when "plucked" and carries the sounds through a cable which attaches to an amplifier or "amp".

Even though i am left-handed and thus cursed to wall the perverbial guitar desert for eternity, I wil assume most of you play or will play right-handed.

So in the sitting position, the guitar will rest as follows..

    seatingpositionxb0.jpg

    casual-sitting-front.jpg or crossed-leg-layersWEB.jpg

Your left hand will "fret" the strings...hold down the strings at certian locations while strumming the string with your right hand.

Your Right harm will rest over the top of the guitar around your armpit allowing your right hand to hang over the strings where you will "strum" the guitar".

Your left hand or "fretting hand" should come from underneath the neck of the guitar and only the tips of your index through pinky fingers actually touch the string.

Your thumb in the meanwhile will rest in the middle of neck of guitar.

    left_hand_position.png

This called the "classical" position allows access to all 6 strings of the guitar and if done correctly will allow you to play the strings you want, while not muting an adjoining string (unless you want to, but more on that another time).

So you got your guitar on your lap, hands in the right place....what's next?

To pick or not to pick.

This is a pick or "plectrum" as called in England.

    FenderClassicPicksImage-a1c52f9f996c1eb664bde3051e67e813.jpg

They come in all shapes, sizes, material, colors, widths, etc, etc.

You can either use a guitar pick or your thumb to strum at the start.

If you have a guitar pick...hold it like this..

    l8_f1.jpg

Ok!, Guitar = Check, sitting position = check, fretting hand = check, strumming hand = check.

    Now let's rock!....Kidding!

Ok this is just the beggining and I just provided a the real basics.

I'm going to end this post and continue on a 2nd one to break it up a little, and then show you what those stringy things are, and how to play them, and teach you the basics of TAB, guitars own language which requires no one to have to learn music notation if they don't want to!

    To be continued...

  5. Yeah that was the word that he mentioned.

Yes I know they are artists. I was meaning to suggest all the artisans of the day, whether literary or art in the case of what was drilled into by my mother... "Adam, notice the heavy brown and darker red tones specific to the style of Rembrandt".

As far as her book is concerned, until my Peter Stuyvesant tell all comes in from Amazon, it will have to do :P.

Btw, I bought this 2 months ago. Started to work on it, sprained my mouth on one of your words, and have not tried since.

Maybe will give her another dance...

  6. And, if you're German, 'Immer erade aus'! :P

My Father has a Dutch friend who lives in Abcoude (sp?) who was actually a pow during WW2. He used to say that the Dutch resistance would ask new resistance fighters to prenounce certain Dutch words, from which they would easily detect if they were German infiltrators or not.

Regarding Wassenar. It is a beautiful neighborhood. I mention the thatch roofs, as my friend and I were setting off fireworks to celebrate New Years, and his father was reminding us to be carefull as if one of our bottle rockets landed on a roof....FOOOOOM. Break out the Marshmellows.

I am well aware of the many famous dutch writers over the years. My mother is a professional artist, so she drilled into me as a child all the various styes including Rembrandt, Vermeer, etc.

I speak of this book as it shows much of the imigration laws in Holland in the early 90's, and how they dealt with this first rush of refugees, and other seeking asylum in Western Europe at that time.

More contemporary for the kids at home you see :).

  7. I see Sander stole my thunder already... :aaevil:

Though I might elaborate a bit when it comes to names. There is also the expression Lowlands, which includes both the Netherlands and Belgium (though I believe Les Pais Bas refers to the Netherlands only) and the Benelux is of course Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg. The official name of The Netherlands, by the way, is The Kingdom of The Netherlands and Oversees Territories, since we still have a few colonies left.

I advise you learn the language and check out a thing we call Cabaret (which is a bit different than other uses of the word abroad). It's a bit like standup comedy, but these are longer shows which often have a story arc, songs and can even use a stage set to comedic effect. Whereas standup comedy tends to favour basic jokes or even oneliners purely for entertainment value, cabaret is often full of engagement, tackeling subjects socially relevant to society. 'Kicking over holy houses', we call it. This is often done by means of very harsh and black humour. Much of this humour, however, is language or cultural reference-based, so will be hard for foreigners to get, which might explain your misconception.

And, eh, we have a national dog? The Dutch heraldic animal is the lion:

    148.jpg

Googling for national dogs yields a Kanaan Dog for Isreal and a naked national dog for Mexico, but not Dutch dogs... Am I missing something?

    Yep, ya gotta national pooch...

My memories of Holland revolve around...

    1) hot chicks in der Haague. Holy crap, nothing like looking at a tall blonde eye to eye.

    2) Shite weather

    3) Trying raw herring from a street vendor (not bad I must say)

    4) Thatched roofs even on the most expensive houses in Wassenar where I was staying.

    5) Friendly people

    6) taking a train and noticing out the window a boat sailing ABOVE me.

    7) A strong belief in the evils of heating the house properly.

    8) Taking about a week to learn to "correctly" say Leens, recht, and recht door. (I know I spelled them wrong. Spelling them correctly would have taken another week).

Acutually reading the book now "Infidel", or which much takes place in Holland.

    Facinating novel, which I recomend...

  8. Holland is a fine country. I've had the pleasure to have been on a few occassions.

Tallest people on average of any Nation.

Only country to have a "National Dog".

Mr. Goo, how about explaining the difference between the term "Netherlands" and "Holland"?

Any good story you have about dykes would also be appreciated :).

  9. 1. I expressed my opinion on this topic in several posts, but I can give you the short version:

Homosexuality is not a choice. Why I think that?

    a) gay people told me that they didn't chose to be gay

Like I said before to Mari; Just because the don't remember it's origination does not preclude that they were born this way...unless they kept an in utero diary. I also agree in the distinct possability that there was no choice involved either way, however was based on a event or series of events during early childhood they may not even remember.

    B) why would anyone want to invite hate, humiliation and social marginalization into his or her life?

If you have ever been horny and aspired to have an orgasm, whatever floats your boat will supercede any mocking that may be inflicted on you. Or this point of yours would enforce the need to find an alternative option/cure/fill in word here to where they may no longer have to be subject to those things.

    c) there are people who actually suffer from depression, because they can't accept their sexuality (being gay)

See 2nd part to the above response in B)

    d) why would a senator go to some gay-toilet-meeting-place-thing and jeopardize his reputation if he had a choice not to do so? (this is in no way meant as an attack)

It is common knowledge that the Senator in question by no means attempted to invite the undercover policeman. As he plainly stated he is a "large man" who tends to spread his feet wide apart when making "the duece", and may have inadvertantly touched the foot of the policeman in the next stall. Therefor I propose the Senator put forth a bill requring the widening of all bathrooms stalls in the US to a MINIMUM of 6 feet across, where unless you take a dookie while performing a split, would deter such missunderstandings from happening in the future.

    Now Mari wrote...

Right, with regards to the HIV/AIDS argument:

While gay men are overrepresented among HIV infected, woman-to-woman transferrence of HIV is very rare. Lesbian women is generally a group with a very low ratio of HIV and AIDS.

If this is somehow god's or nature's punishment/regulating mechanism, you'd think it would weed out both genders of gays, wouldn't you?

This has nothing to do with God (specifally). This has to do with promescuity. As I mentioned in a past post, women tend to be by nature more "nurturing/maternal" and no matter the orientation aspire to have the long monogamous relationship. Men on the other hand will screw anything with a pulse if you let them. Gay men as we have seen will go as far as to have unprotected sex as pro-tease inhibitors have given the gay male community the false impretion that even if someone gets HIV, its curable/treatable with this new medication. And to hell with wearing a hat on your jimmy when you can ride bare back and pop a pill later on!

  10. Oh I deffo agree that there should be more research. Knowledge is always our friend.

If there is some sort of treatment for it, well. If the treatment can be performed throughout a person's life and thus when they are capable of requesting or rejecting the treatment themselves, it would fundamentally be okay. However, bear in mind that even for those old enough to make that call, it's still a huge problem that many would likely find themselves pressured into it by parents, friends and so on.

Then there's the fact that the mere idea of "curing" homosexuality conditions that it's a disease or negative condition, and I guess I just don't see it as one. Unnatural, yeah, but a small percentage of us being gay is not harmful to society nor a fatal flaw in the individual. In my opinion, if something like a "cure" is possible, then it should be considered as radical as a sex change. Not something you can do on a whim, not something parents can order for their child, but a radical alteration of a human being that only that person can decide and only that person will have to live with.

I agree that it is no small matter. Also in all honesty I don't see such an option being available to anyone in our lifetime as it is not exactly at the forefront on the priority scale in the medical community.

I'm not sure that if such an option existed, it would be as radical as a sex change. But again, this is theory and would be dertmined on the treatment available. With "Sex re-assignment" (as sex change operations are called), the person having the procedure is enduced with heavy doses of testosterone or estrogen, and plastic surgery is performed to add/remove a penis or clitoris, and add/remove breast tissue. Not exactly getting a tooth filled.

Now I used the word "cure" as I don't know which other word to use. My views on the lifestyle, practice, preference is pretty clear by now. If I use instead "reverse,treat,remedy,counter-act,solve,etc" the words would still be dealing with conversion from one sexual preference to another.

Whether a small percentage of human kind practicing homosexuality (1 in 10 "they" say?) is good or not for humankind is, as we have seen in prior posts, much more subjective. On the flip side, if a medical option with minimal risk to the individual/parent is available where that they would afterwards prefer to engage in heterosexual relationships and all the possitives and negatives that go with it; I don't see the downside either to the individual or society as a whole.

  11. While they say we have sexual impulses from a very very young age, you're right that we probably can't remember those impulses until we grow a little older. Still, considering all of this, how do we know that people aren't born gay?

Without further study and research, we can't, thus my earlier proposal of research.

If causation can eventually be determined, and treatment (whether medicinal, or w/e) can be offered as an alternative to prospective parents, or the individual themselves, then imo it would be benefit everyone. I say offered not forced upon.

  12. Well I've never heard of any research on the sexuality of children of gay people, but if there is any that takes into account both nature (the sexuality of the parents/sperm/egg donor) and nurture that would certainly offer interesting insight. If anyone know of such studies, feel free to bring them forth. I'm not 100% sure what your point was Susie, but if you'd care to clarify and substantiate it, I'd be interested to hear it!

Still as long as there is no definitive research on this stuff, doesn't it make sense to believe that gay people know whether they have been gay from birth or only developed those feelings later? If someone's broken a leg, surely they know best how they broke it. If you're happy, you'll usually know why. All gay people I know are as intelligent and self-insightful as anyone else, and are surely very competent judges of their own psyche and condition.

Of course, as far as I'm concerned, nature vs nurture is a purely philsophical discussion, and whether it's genetic, environmental, chosen for kicks or some combination of these, the discussion should not affect or overshadow homosexuals' civil and legal rights or value and qualities as human beings. But if we need the discussion, it's rather absurd to not consider gay people the best source of insight into the gay mind.

Unless you have an incredible memory Mari; I'm not quite sure I believe that you can remember your sexual preference at birth, or even at 4 or 5 years old for that matter. I don't remember coming out of the womb and blowing a wolf whistle at the nurse. So I think it fair to say that not even gay people can reasonibly decree that they have been so since birth. Since they first had sexual urges? Ok I can believe that. But from the time of your first sexual urge, can you be sure that no stimulus may have caused it? An event or series of events that may have steered you in one direction or another?

You say you had a happy childhood, and I believe it. I also believe that stimulus can come in all forms, not just bad.

Someone watches a tv show about spiders at a very early age. Never likes spiders after that. Doesn't neccesarily mean they had a horrible childhood, however this one forgotten tv show effects how they view spiders the rest of their lives.

So, it's not a question of who to ask, as no person can remember anything early on in life.

  13. Oh boy, here we go again...a little research would be in order before making such rediculous statements. Click here

Just as the case with vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse would cause the same effect on the orafice in question.

What happens to the structure of a vagina from the time a women first has sex to the time say she has been with a man a few more times? The area becomes larger. Same would apply analy. I have a friend who worked in a a variety of social assistance originizations who deal with those from all walks of life who find themselves in a destitute situation. He mentioned that he would often deal with people who were permiscous in the gay community who had to resort to diapers as their anal wall was so stretched they could no longer control their bowels.

So it's not a stretch to suggest that other medical coplications would occur from the same behavior.

  14. I've had this convo enough times to give you the answer GDI!

If gay people were accepted world wide as equals in society, and thus granted the same privledges granted to all peoples of this world, there would be no clandestine ronde vous in secret bath houses, bathroom stalls at certain airports, and weigh stations off of major highways where strangers would rush to have quickys on the sly, thus increasing the likely hood of passing on or acquiring the HIV virus. If these people were allowed to hold hands in public, marry, date openly, apply to any job, run for office, without fear of recrimination, there would be no need for such actions, and thus the rate of AIDS in the homesexual community would plummit like Star Jones' waist line. (I am paraphrasing of course).

I usually retort such statements asking why the rate of those with AIDS inside the gay community itself is SIGNIFICANTLY higher among homesexual males vs. Lesbians?

Could it be that men are horny dogs who will hump a tree if you don't watch over them every second? Where as women in any relationship are more "maternal" thus more likely to settle down with one sexual partner over a longer period of time?

Are we to summise that if the permiscuous gay male be allowed into holy matrimony, that they would be as faithfull on the whole as any married straight man?

  15. The good ol' US of A has actually overthrown 14 governments worldwide over the last 120 years, starting with the Hawaiian Monarchy in 1893. Since WWII we have bombed 23 countries. It's not always covered very thoroughly in history books, but our country's history is not a clean or pretty one -- lots of bloodshed, and many innocent lives lost. Consequently, there are many groups, around the world who view America as a source of evil, violence, and death. And (despite what some would say) they don't hate our freedom -- they hate what we did to them.

As a country, it's surprising to me, we haven't been hit harder before 9/11. Nobody is suggesting the people in the WTC deserved to die (including Sir O Pus, who describes them as "innocent"), but as a nation, we ARE reaping what we have sown.

We can blame our these leaders for the current debacle, but the leaders who perpetrated most of the older interventions are long since dead. Not much to do but suck it up and take what's coming to us, while preventing what we can. Possibly sending food & medical aid (instead of troops) to some places would turn popular support around in our favor. We don't always need to be the world's policeman or bully. Giving people a reason to join Al-Qaida isn't working.

I love this country, but let's not whitewash our history.

When danger reared it's ugly head!... Ah you can finish the rest :P.

Good to see you again BSR.

Now I never said nor attempted to suggest that our government past or present is as pure as the driven snow.

However for every blot on our historical past you can mention, I can come back with many more situations where our country aided an oppressed people bettering their situation. Of course one would expect to come back with the alterior motives that MUST be the case for every good work we have ever done as a nation, but then on we go.

So all these bass ackward nations who ask from us (not through the media of course) but through political channels, we should basicaly tell them to F**K off as it will only put our nation in harms way. It will be interesting to see 10 years after this new foreign policy takes place what the world will look like, and what our safety will look like.

You also mention sending food and medical equipment to those in need. Who sends the most $$$ (or equivilant currency) in aid annually to Africa? (it's not San Marino ;) )

So finally you suggest we should "suck it up" and take whats coming to us.

Negative, we rachet up things a notch. Invade Eastern Pakistan and clear out the entire area, whether the Pakistani people care or not. Oh dear, we may make them upset. Horses--t. If push ever came to shove, we could give that nation right back to India on a silver platter (granted more glass like in apearence).

Will there be reciprocity? Yup, but at the end of the day, when the dust has settled, the head will be chopped off the beast.

Mr. Puss thinks his Euro left wing liberal ideology is something new to us. It'll be the day when I get a history/civics/political lesson from a teenage refugee punk who smokes herbal cigs, and thinks he's a rebel.

  16. I know it's distasteful concerning this tragedy.. but i can only quote the bible here: "You (U.S.A. in this case) reap what you sow" ... It's a shame thou, that innocent people died and not the ones who would have deserved to die... like the NATO bombing and destroying whole serbia and killing innocent people in '99 instead of just killing the evildoers like Milosevic and some of the generals of the serbian army

I'm forgetting the first part of your biblical comment your holiness, however I will say that I am not quite sure what actions undertaken by the US prior to 9/11 would warrant what these people did. Maybe the good book has a reference you would like to refer to.

Regarding Serbia however I will comment. Maybe your country should have thought better then to throw their support behind a dictator such as Milosevic. Maybe a select amount of your population should not have killed mass amounts of Bosnians, Croations and other members of the former Yugoslavia who were Muslim (I guess you reap what you sow).

While I too would like technology to build a bomb to kill all of those "evil doers" you speak of while leaving the innocents unharmed, unfortunately in times of miltary action innocents are always killed. Especially when the evil doers bravely reside and place armaments in the areas where innocents reside. Bottom line, Milosevic was captured, and died of a massive coronory in the Hague awaiting trial. My crocodile tears are flowing.

I know many people in New York from the Bosnia-Herzogovina, Crotia, Montenegro, who don't seem to think we did such a bad thing.
