One of the most-requested characters in the Super Smash Bros. series has been Banjo-Kazooie. Despite the series debuting on Nintendo 64, the fact that Microsoft now owns developer Rare made it feel less likely. However, the Nintendo Direct at E3 finally gave fans what they have been wanting.

Banjo-Kazooie play as one character and bring what appears to be a new Gruntilda-focused stage. The new Banjo-Kazooie DLC comes to Super Smash Bros Ultimate this fall.

The announcement of a Switch release for the Animal Crossing series was met with much excitement. While it was originally announced for a 2019 release, today's E3 Nintendo Direct brought the news that the development team has pushed it back to March.

We did get some early looks at the game, which is officially called New Horizons. The footage shows the Villager setting up a tent, crafting using Tom Nook's workbench, and pole vaulting over a river.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now scheduled for a Switch release of March 20, 2020.

Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is a cute-looking tactics game with a title that probably could have been shortened. The game is based on the upcoming Netflix series, which is in turn inspired by the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal.

The game is being developed by BonusXP and En Masse Entertainment, with a planned release window of 2019. There's no word as of yet about it coming to platforms other than the Nintendo Switch.

Panzer Dragoon has held a loyal fan base ever since the series' debut on Sega Saturn in 1995. While the franchise has been largely dormant, today's Nintendo Direct gave long-suffering fans hope, as a new version of the original Panzer Dragoon is coming to Switch.

Panzer Dragoon: Remake is being developed by Forever Entertainment, and is giving the dragoon-riding, reticle-based combat of the original a visual makeover. We don't know much more at this time, but Forever Entertainment has announced it's also working on Panzer Dragoon II Zwei: Remake as well. Panzer Dragoon: Remake comes to Switch this winter.

    pokemon_direct.png

We learned a lot about Pokémon Sword and Shield last week, so expectations were low when it came to new information surrounding the two entries during today's E3 Nintendo Direct. However, The Pokémon Company did drop a couple of details for one of the Switch's most anticipated releases of 2019.

The Poké Ball Plus controller, which launched alongside last year's Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu and Eevee, has some minor functionality with Sword and Shield. While you can't use it as a full-fledged controller like you could in Let's Go, Pikachu and Eevee, you can transfer Pokémon to the controller and walk them around. While we don't know what happens when you take them for a walk, Game Freak assures us it's "something good."

In addition, we learned a bit more about the water gym leader in the Galar region. Her name is Nessa, and she can use the new Dynamax ability, which lets her grow her Pokémon to enormous sizes. People who play the game at E3 will be able to battle her.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are set to release on November 15.

The announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for Switch earlier this year took many Nintendo fans by surprise, even if we didn't know much about what the remake would deliver. Regardless, it still skyrocketed to become one of the Switch's most anticipated announced games. Today's Nintendo Direct presentation gave us a bit more info surrounding the remake, including a fall release date.

The video shown off during the Direct presentation showed glimpses of several boss battles, the side-view fishing minigame, and the mischievous raccoon from the Mysterious Forest.

After the surprise reveal of Luigi's Mansion 3 last September, details have been scarce regarding the green-clad brother's next starring role. We learned a bit more about what kind of haunted hijinks to expect when Luigi's spooky adventures continue.

The game kicks off as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and the Toads are invited to a hotel. After Luigi arrives, things take a spooky turn and it's up to him to save the rest of the gang.

Just like with past Luigi's Mansion games, you use the strobe function of your flashlight to stun ghosts, then suck them up using your Poltergust vacuum. This time, Luigi has a new Poltergust: the G-00. This new model gives him the ability to slam ghosts on the ground while sucking them up, inflicting additional damage. In addition, the Poltergust G-00 can fire a plunger to latch onto surfaces to reveal secrets; you can also rip shields out of ghosts' hands using this method. Luigi also gets a new moveset called Burst, which sends a shockwave out from him to blow away ghosts and give Luigi a little jump.

Gooigi, the slimy green Luigi clone introduced in the 3DS port of Luigi's Mansion, returns in a larger role. You can use Gooigi to slip through rails and spikes to reach areas Luigi can't on his own. You can swap between Luigi and Gooigi, or a second player can grab a controller and play as Gooigi.

Luigi's Mansion 3 also brings back the cooperative multiplayer mode from Dark Moon called ScareScraper. This four-player multiplayer mode can be played with local or online players. The mode tasks players to work together to clear floors of ghosts before the timer expires.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is set to launch on Nintendo Switch sometime in 2019.

    Publisher: Ubisoft
    Developer: Ubisoft Toronto
    Release: March 6, 2020
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

I remember watching the first Watch Dogs' reveal back in 2012 and being completely blown away. I loved the idea of a virtual playground where several objects and people could be manipulated and hacked, all wrapped up in a fascinating world where surveillance and privacy were major themes.

When Watch Dogs finally released in 2014, I enjoyed the experience but also felt a tinge of disappointment: this was not the hacker world I envisioned. Possibilities were limited, manipulating the world around me could only go so far, and Aiden was basically an empty trench coat with legs. Watch Dogs 2 introduced a far more colorful protagonist with Marcus along with bigger and better hacking opportunities, but it still didn't completely compel me in the ways I hoped.

Watch Dogs Legion, which was announced this E3 during Ubisoft's press conference, looks to be the most promising entry yet and possibly the developer's most ambitious game ever. Here's four reasons why this could be the Watch Dogs we've all been waiting for.

    wdl_screen_drone_e3_resize.jpg

Post-Brexit London Is A Rich Setting

Up until now, Watch Dogs has always took place in America. While Watch Dogs' vision of Chicago felt empty, Watch Dogs 2 created a world brimming with life in San Francisco. Now, the series is going international as it moves to a near-future London where Brexit has devastated the country.

"We have created a near future version of the city where technology has taken a dark turn and society is on the brink of collapse," game design director Kent Hudson says. "In short, London is seeing her downfall. It’s a time of social crisis: AI is devastating the economy, the pound has collapsed and is being replaced by cryptocurrency, organized crime has taken a resurgence."

It's a dystopian future where civilians disappear from their beds in the middle of the night or are sent to deportation centers. Both authoritarians and opportunists exploit the situation for their own selfish gain, such as Albion (one of the main antagonists), a security force with questionable motives.

During a gameplay demo, I briefly explored parts of London, including the grungy Camden Town that's a hotbed for artists and Trafalgar Square in central London. Camden Town was particularly striking, with colorful neon signs and street art murals.

    wdl_screen_socialcrisis_e3_resize.jpg

Watch Dogs Legion Can't Escape Politics

Because of its post-Brexit setting and themes about rising up against corrupt governments or authorities, politics are undoubtedly a part of Watch Dogs Legion despite Ubisoft's statement last week about the company not taking political stances in its games. Hocking believes that it's up to the player to come to their own interpretations, but says that Legion is absolutely a game with a message.

"Depending on how you want to interpret what [Watch Dogs Legion] has to say, you the one that's going say whether it's political. But this game has something to say and it's a lot about things that we see in the world that are really messed up right now," Clint Hocking says. "Hackers corrupting democracy, the rise of surveillance, the separation of rich and poor, and the increasing wealth gap about people being displaced around the world. All of these things are things that are happening in the world. We're making a speculative fiction that's [looks to the future and asks], well, what if these things go very, very wrong? And what's our response to that?"

    wdl_screen_grannytaser_e3_resize.jpg

You Can Recruit And Play As Any Character In The World

The most striking element to Watch Dogs Legion is that it completely changes the concept of NPCs – every character you see on-screen can be recruited to your DedSec resistance. Similar to Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, you build a group of heroes to do your bidding. Once you've won a potential recruit over (by completing missions for them) they're added as a member and you can play as them whenever you like. No more Marcus or Aiden; Watch Dogs Legion has no single central character, and instead unifies a resistance of several unique personalities.

"These aren’t simple cosmetics like skins on basic characters – everyone in our world has a fully simulated life," Hudson says. "They have a personal backstory, they have unique appearances, you can customize their clothing, they have a fully voice acted persona, and they even have gameplay traits that brings a unique [advantages] to Dedsec. You profile people in the world and you can see everything about them. People have jobs, relationships, families, friends, enemies, their own sets of problems that are set in our dystopian vision of London."

This means you can create a band of eclectic misfits, like a group of badass grandmas, a team of punk rockers, or a collection of uptight straight arrows. Cutscenes and story moments (and, to be clear, Legion DOES have an overarching main story despite the many playable characters) will play out differently depending on your character's personality. Ubisoft says the development team has written several variations for these scenes. For example, an ex-lawyer may act differently in a certain situation or even have different mannerisms than an aspiring rapper would.

"Even if you recruit a character and go into a cutscene with them, and then recruit a different character and redo the same cutscene with them, they have completely different scripts," Hocking says. "So it's not just different voices and different animations, it's different scripts and different personalities and different personas."

You can mold your resistance to your liking, and customize their clothes and playstyle along the way. For example, Watch Dogs Legion introduces three new classes: Hacker, Infiltrator, and Enforcer. The main ability for Hackers are that they have access to a spider bot, which is a small, controllable device that can act as a turret or can be controlled remotely to scout out areas or to perform takedowns, without having your character enter the area themselves. Enforcers are the combat-focused class, where you can use explosive rounds as well as non-lethal sticky mines to lay traps or help give you more control of the battlefield. And finally, Infiltrators are best at stealth and melee. They can disappear from view thanks to an AR cloak for a brief period to pass guards undetected or run from combat.

Another fascinating direction is that your characters can die permanently if you're not careful. While you may get attached to certain playable characters, they can be defeated in combat and won't respawn.

    wdl_screen_authoritarianstate_resize.jpg

More Non-Lethal Options Than Ever Before

The Watch Dogs series has, since its inception, suffered from narrative dissonance. Why would an upbeat activist like Marcus murder people in cold blood? Wasn't it weird that Aiden would go to his nephew's birthday party at one moment, and then in the next kill off everyone? Watch Dogs Legion may not fix this problem completely, but it at least introduces more reasonable and believable methods for confronting enemies.

Hocking says that half the weapons will be non-lethal, and that the development team has greatly invested in the melee system to make it more dynamic and interesting. Guns will be completely optional. A big question is, can you play through the entire game without killing a soul? Hocking is hesitant to say yes because of certain story moments.

"There are some climactic battles and I'll be really clear, if you defeat them with non-lethal weapons, they disappear from the game – just as if you defeated them with lethal weapons," Hocking says. "So it's sort of open to interpretation. I don't want to lead with the message that this is a game where you absolutely will never kill anyone, or can can choose to never kill anyone. It's not a value for us. I do think we did invest heavily in non lethal options."

Stay tuned for more coverage on Watch Dogs Legion. We'll be publishing our hands-on impressions in the coming days. You can also listen to our thoughts about the reveal from Ubisoft's press conference.

A new free-to-play arcadey sports title would not be the first game I’d think to be highlighting as a standout at E3. But after a few rounds of opponent-bashing, ball-throwing, half-pipe jumping insanity, I’m surprisingly excited to get back in and hone my skills.

Roller Champions is a made-up sport that blends elements of basketball, hockey, skateboarding, baseball, roller derby, and probably a few other experiences I’m not thinking of, and transforms them all into something new and weird. Players compete in 3v3 matches to either reach 5 points or the highest score by the time the 7 minute timer runs out, whichever comes first.

The field/pitch/ring is an oval track that is bounded on the sides by half-pipe shaped walls. After the ball is flung onto the track, the goal is for your team to grab it, and then complete at least one full lap while maintaining possession. At that point, a large circular goal brightens up with your color, which means you can throw the ball through for a point. If you manage to make it around twice (or perhaps you just missed your first shot and somehow maintained possession after the bad throw) you can get a bonus point for two laps. Finish three full laps before scoring and you score five points, enough to end the game outright.

Along the way, you and the opposing team are endlessly slamming into each other, jumping over each other, and generally making a ruckus around the track. While the ball should generally move in a designated direction around the track, the same rule does not apply to the players themselves, so one of the best strategies to block the team with possession is to turn around and come at them head on from the other direction.

The dodge and tackle button sits on the same button, and is context sensitive to whether or not you have the ball. The same is true for pass/ask for a pass (which calls for the ball from a teammate so you can show you’re open and ready to speed off). Much of the rest of the game is about managing your momentum and speed, and desperately trying to knock over the opponent players in wild flailing check moves, while simultaneously avoiding meeting the same fate at their hands. By jumping and pumping your way up and down the half pipe, you can build up tremendous speed and really slam into the enemy team’s players, or zip away with the ball after a well-timed pass from a teammate.

In the actual game as you play through, you’ll be trying to advance your character through the ranks of spectacle and fame. Rather than earn XP, your goal is to gain more fans, and as your fame grows, you’ll compete in matches with larger and larger crowds.

If I’m honest, Roller Champions only truly managed to capture my attention after I sat and played with it for a bit, at which point I really began to grasp the potential for fun. If you’re curious, Ubisoft is running an early test for the game on Uplay PC right now through June 14, so you can give it a shout and see if you feel similarly.

    Publisher: Ubisoft
    Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
    Release: February 25, 2020
Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Ubisoft offered me the chance to get a closer look at Gods & Monsters earlier today, and the project shows a lot of promise. The new IP is crafted by the team behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey utilizes the existing Assassin’s Creed engine and technology, but uses that technology to create an entirely new game and play system, with its own distinct art style. While it shares traits in common with Assassin’s Creed, one of the most notable shifts is toward a lighter and more all-ages friendly narrative vibe, and with a clear mythological bent, rather than a historical one.

The story of the game is told as a narration from the famous Ancient Greek poet, Homer, as he tells a story to his grandchildren. His magic lyre brings the story to life for the children, and relays a story steeped in Greek mythology. Players control Phoenix, a player-crafted character (male or female) who acts as an agent of the gods to hunt down Typhon and his many monsters.

Gameplay focuses on a mix of freeform exploration, traversal, combat, and puzzle-solving, across what appears to be a relatively vast open world. Phoenix wields powers gifted to him or her by the gods, which afford dramatic ways to affect combat. In one sequence, we saw Phoenix jump off a cliff, and then gently float down by summoning a flaming bird that matches the character’s namesake. In another instance, Phoenix chopped down a tree, and then used telekinesis to fling it a great distance. In addition to ground combat, the game allows for aerial combat situations to arise as well.

    gm_screen_harpy_e3_190610_2_1560172590.15pm_pst.jpg

Stamina constrains many of your actions and movement capabilities, not unlike what players have come to expect in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Also like in that game, players will need to plan their route as they explore, since reaching a given area demands that you combine your jumping and climbing abilities along particular routes to reach a destination.

As an interesting side note, the version of the game that Ubisoft showed us was running on a mobile phone using Stadia, but played on a gamepad/controller. The version of the game we saw running on the small screen was smooth and attractive, and the bright painterly art aesthetic shone through. Distant vistas had that exciting quality that made us eager to go explore them.

Gods & Monsters is set for release on February 25, 2020, and is coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, and Stadia. You can also watch the game's debut trailer.

We've known for some time that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics had teamed up with Marvel to bring us a new Avengers game, but it has been kept tightly under wraps. Tonight, we got our first real glimpse of the title at the Square Enix press conference, and the Marvel heroes came out swinging.

Marvel Avengers is an online-enabled action/adventure game with a focus on cinematic storytelling, built to be played by up to four players online at the same time. While the main characters at launch (Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Iron Man) should be familiar to anyone who hasn’t been hiding under a rock in the last few years, it’s notable that Crystal Dynamics is crafting their own takes on these characters and their world, so they won’t be part of the same storytelling continuum as those in the comics or movies.

The story begins with the Avengers in a celebratory mood, opening their west coast headquarters near San Francisco from onboard their custom helicarrier, which is powered by a form of terrigen energy (perhaps hinting at some involvement of the Inhumans in this story?). In what appears to be a disastrous heist gone wrong, the helicarrier goes down, large swaths of the city are badly damaged or destroyed, and Captain America is taken out of action, though it's not entirely clear whether he actually dies or if something else happens to him.

The story cuts to five years later after the now-infamous "A-Day" and disbanding of the Avengers, when the team must reassemble to face a grave new threat.

The game has some well-known voice talent connected to it. Nolan North is playing Tony Stark, Troy Baker is taking on the role of Bruce Banner, Laura Bailey is donning the Black Widow role, Travis Willingham is lending his voice to Thor, and Jeff Schine is performing as Captain America.

While we got some screenshots that suggest third-person action, the presentation at the Square Enix press conference fell short of offering any substantive looks at the game in action. We did get one extra character tease near the end of the presentation, with the appearance of Hank Pym using his Pym particles to shrink a massive tank walker into a miniaturized version of itself.

Crystal Dynamics was also quick to point out that Avengers is planned as a game that will grow over time with new regions and characters, all of which will come free to those who have the game. In addition, the team promised no loot boxes or pay-to-win purchases connected to the project.

Avengers is targeting a release on May 15, 2020, and is coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
