We gather on the servers every weekend and sometime during the week as well. So your statement isn't entirely accurate.
Like all day on the weekend, or what time? How many of you guys?
I guess the servers must get some use, or they wouldn't still be up, right? Still, if it's mostly only on the weekends, that's still "mostly no one" if you count those other 5 days of the week, especially compared to other online games.

Well, it's not like there's always people online like a typical MMO game these days, quite frankly there's usually NO ONE as you've noticed, with forum conversations spanning over months or years from inactivity. But you may have luck if you stay in a server for awhlie and people notice that it's not empty (omg another person! lol).

This is only in the Playstation 2 version. All the PC versions don't have that whole secret shooting area that you can enter on the right side of the Baron's house. I even checked with the spectator mod. I guess we can assume that Baron Dumas found his wife annoying at times.

So despite glitches being allowed, I guess in-game cheats like mpmaphole, which are still "part of the game", weren't allowed. Of course, most of these glitches were fixed in Nolf 2 (by version 1.3 at least). Completing a scene despite failing still remains, but there's only one mission that makes you fail for blowing your cover and it's at a part where it shouldn't matter. Quicksaving still lets you skip parts of conversations, but Nolf 2 takes longer to load and there's only 2 required instances where it might save some time. You can also still get on Snowmobiles or grab dead bodies through certain objects if they are close enough. Other than some rare jumps that let you get ontop of roofs or fences, there's not any other useful glitches that I know of for Nolf 2 without using in-game cheats.
I can't get Bacalov Corrector jumping to work in the GotY version or version 1.004 of the vanilla game, but that could just be me. I've gotten everything else to work, such as Lipstick Grenade jumping, clipping, semi-clipping, and no-clipping. However for no-clipping, after releasing all the keys you can't just press any directional key; you have to press a key that would move you into a clippable object (for example, forward if you're facing said object), sometimes multiple times. One more thing that quick save abuse does is reset the amount of loaded ammo you have to full, so although it may not be that useful for speedruns you can use it to avoid reloading. Makes you wonder if they even fixed any bugs with those patches.
One of the best tricks you're missing is the flying Motorcycle and Snowmobile glitch (it should work in version 1.0 since it works in version 1.004). Bring a vehicle to a ladder, get on the ladder, and then mount the vehicle from on the ladder. You will now be riding the vehicle at the same level you were at when you were on the ladder. Additionally you will go higher if you drive up higher terrain, and if you bounce off of such terran then you will shoot up towards the sky. If you go high enough you'll eventually hit an invisible ceiling. You can either stay up there if you stop moving briefly, or start falling back down (and you can go higher again if you want to), but in any case you can dismount and use quick save abuse to safely get back down to the ground. This will let you complete the Alpine Intrigue Scene 4 mission significantly faster, if you use the ladder on the tower by the first electric fense.
Another good trick to know: Most doors can be closed before they are fully opened and vice versa, if you click on them once or twice (depending on the door) before they are fully opened or closed. For example, in Safecracker Scene 6, if you touch an infrared beam, you can "open" a door before it completely closes and seals you in with poison gas. While the mission won't finish if you take a picture of the documents once this happens, it is still pretty hilarious.
There are two cameras in the game that can be shot and destroyed without setting off an alarm (aside from the ones in The Assigment level). One is in A Man of Influence, Scene 2, behind the trailer of chemical barrels near the gate at the end of the level. Destroying this camera will let you kill the guard by that trailer without having to wait for him to move closer to you. The other camera is the one in Trouble in the Tropics, Scene 4, which is at the beginning of the level. Destroying that one may not help for speedruns though.

there is also the same way to get to the roof of a club ^^
How exactly do you get ontop of the roof? Just curious.

Why isn't glitching/exploiting considered "fair"? Anyone can do it with the proper knowledge and skill, just like anything else in the game. For example, if my opponent doesn't know where the Balcov Corrector is, does that mean that I can't use it against them? I think not. You don't have to use another program or edit the game, you're just playing it as is. Dishonorable? Maybe, but it's technically part of the game even if it's unintended.
This particular exploit is also risky to use, at least when I try it in single player, because I more often die by falling through the floor and into a black void than actually making it into the aquarium. So if someone succeeds in performing it they kind of got lucky/earned it. You can't get out without dieing either, and if you have more than one opponent and they all stay away from you then you won't neccessarily win by default, even if you are currently in the lead.
TL;DR: It's very possible to win if someone else uses this exploit that is naturally part of the game, even if you don't use it, so don't complain.

These questions have been bugging me for a long time and I can't figure out a good explanation:
In Morocco, how did Bruno know that Volkov wasn't going to succeed in kiling him and still pull off what he wanted to do, "dissappear for awhile"?
When Volkov appears to have apprehended Tom in the scene after Cate cracks the Baron's safe, why does Tom still try to save Cate and why does Volkov shoot (or pretend to shoot?) Tom and have him dissappear as well? Was Volkov tired of Tom's failures or did Tom also want to "dissappear"? They are on the same side, after all, so why didn't they just both try to kill Cate?
When Cate apprehends Tom in the "graveyard", why does Smith shoot Tom instead of Cate? Was he also fed up with Tom's failures and he thought he could kill Cate afterwards? I'd still think Cate would come as a priority over Tom to Smith.
Oh yeah, and why on earth would the Baroness blow herself up? I could see why she blew up her husband seeing as she didn't really like him and probably wanted total control over his money and Dumas Enterprises, but she didn't exactly seem depressed enough to kill herself and seemed pretty determined to conquer the world. Did she just drug herself on the spot, when she knew she had failed and that Cate was coming (or even when she was there)?

Whenever I complete the whole mission (all 3 scenes), the "Avoid Detection" objective is always unchecked. What do you have to do to fullfill it?
I'm guessing this might have something to do with it though: In Scene 1, after finding the evidence you need in the Baron's Private Office, I would usually just go right back to the front desk to finish the scene, but apparently closing and putting everything back to the way you found it will check a hidden objective "leave everything as you found it". After that, another objective will appear to "Turn the alarm system back on" but whenever I try to use the lever I used to turn it off in the first place, nothing happens. Is this a bug or is there something that I'm missing? Why are you allowed to even finish the mission without completeing the "leave everything as you found it" objective in the first place?

I have the GOTY edition now. There was no prima strategy guide in it. I bought a pre-owned copy of course. I don't see how they could've fit a game guide in such a small box...
Oh and I found a youtube clip of that mission with Cate as a thief.
That's a shame if we can't play those PS2 missions on the PC. How hard can it be for one of us to port those 3 missions over ourselves.
Yeah I can't believe that both the PS2 exclusive missions and the Rest and Relaxation mission weren't combined into one ultimate Nolf game. They should have been included in the GOTY edition. The PS2 version also had a secret shooting area in "A man of Influence Scene 5" (aka Scene 3 in the PC version) as well as a pen dart weapon which also should have been included.
I actually have the PS2 version and tried putting it into my PC to see if you could do something with the data files, but they are in .IRX format and I can't find a program that can open those. According to "http://filetonic.com/blog/2008/07/10/irx-file/", "There isn't really a way to open an .irx file without the device originally intended to open it. There are two main uses for .irx files-- GPS devices and PlayStation 2 games."
But if you are up to the challenge you could try figuring it out. I'd like to play those missions on the PC possibly as mod files or even better, if you can include them at the right time in the campaign! But I don't even know if that's legal though.

Well Contract Jack has the same graphics engine as NOLF 2 and the weapons are similar, but there is no stealth or as many fun puzzles, or that good of a plot and it emphasizes more on killing a lot by brute force. It seemed more boring than Nolf 1 and 2 to me but if you like average shooter games then you might like it. It's much shorter than Nolf 1 or 2 though. There's not many good mods for the Contract either (just some more multiplayer maps, additional skins and a few new vehicles which is useless without multiplayer) whereas Nolf 2 has several including some additional single player missions and Nolf 1, well there's a lot if you know where to look (I found a ton on other websites that are now shut down and I'm seeing if Eliteone will put some of them up on this site).
For both Nolf games and Contract Jack, the official monolith servers for Nolf 1, 2 and Contract Jack are shut down so multiplayer won't work by default. If you want to use a different server, you have to install a mod or find a way to connect to another one. Here at UnityHQ there is a LivesForever mod for Nolf 2 only which makes you connect to the Unity HQ servers so you can play multiplayer with Nolf 2 but currently there is usually no one on. Whenever I connect, I'm lucky if I find 1 or 2 people on any of the servers.

Yes, H.A.R.M. could stand for Heater and Refridgerator Manufacturing because no one would suspect that it's actually an evil organization posed on galactic domination.
-
What they are currently working on is F.3.A.R. (aka FEAR 3), but who knows if they generate enough profit form this game they might make a nolf 3
If they make enough profit from FEAR 3, they will make a FEAR 4. If they don't make enough, then they will have to go back to a different series or make a new one to stay in business. So your best hope for Nolf 3 is for the rest of their games to be flops, and maybe then they will start looking for a way to get the rights of the Nolf series back to them and make a Nolf 3. This sounds weird, but should we try to boycott monolith until they get our message for more Nolf games? haha
-
This might help NOLF 2 gain some popularity, but I doubt that Monolith, Sierra, and Valve would agree to it especially altogether. Valve does not own the rights to any Nolf games but if they agreed to distribute it on steam then they would probably want some of the profits. They probably wouldn't expect it to sell great either so they wouldn't be expecting a lot of money from it. It still takes work to configure it to be sold and run through steam, and all of the unofficial mods might have to be sold with it (which might increase the price and effort to put the package together) if their players hoped to be in league with us which probably won't happen. Any new mods that would be developed wouldn't be able to be put in the game either without some reformating of steam, and we would probaby have to buy the game again through steam if we wanted to play on their servers and I doubt steam would let their customers use our servers.
Ultimately it probably isn't worth the effort and cost in a business perspective and there may be compatability issues (both with us and with being an older game through steam and its users).

Getting a sequel to a game that is 10 years old or older is pretty unlikely and we haven't heard any news or hints about there being a Nolf 3. To make things worse, Monolith and Sierra split and I think Sierra has the rights to the Nolf series so even if for some reason they decided to try and revive this long old, ultimately unpopular series (you can thank Contract Jack for that), it would be a lot different from the previous ones.
There also isn't much to build on because most of H.A.R.M's leaders and bases were either killed, destroyed/damaged, or quit/became good. The only big bad that remains is the director which doesn't seem like much of a threat by himself (although in chapter 14 an intelligent item hinted about him having an Australian that he thinks he should of sent in to kill Cate instead of Pierre the Mime King).
You are probably better off thinking that we will never get a new Nolf game so you aren't dissappointed and if one does come out by some miracle then we will all be overjoyed.
-
You get that message if you don't have the map running on the server. Do you have the map pack installed?
I do now, thanks. I should have all the mods I need for now.
-
I'd recommend copying the original from your NOLF2 CD and see if that resolves your issue.
I might try that but I got the Livesforever mod and it seems to have fixed everything! Maybe occasionally I might have to try and reload a few times but it's not that much of an issue. The only problem is that I only know how to turn on one mod at a time and I think I always have to have this mod running or I'm most guaranteed of the game crashing. Is there a way to get more than one mod running at a time? It really limits what I can do.
-
By the way when I try to join any server I get a message like "error unable to load world resources" so I can't play. Except in the cooperative server, I get the Client MFC has stopped working crash message.
-
Is there a way to play NOLF 1 and Contract Jack multiplayer too?
-
Is that the original lithtech.exe or the no CD one?
Probably the no CD one.
-
Basically:
It has the same engine as NOLF 2, but there is no option to play through the game with stealth. You take a few steps and all of a sudden you here something like "YOUR MINE!" and at least 3 guys appear and know where you are even if you take cover before they can see you. Then when you kill them all you go a little farther and the same thing happens again. In NOLF 2 this is like some parts in the Art of Murder and Unity HQ chapters, but there is definitely less enemies and you can usually hide from them somewhere.
Contract Jack also doesn't have any intelligent items or skill point system, far less humor which is more mature, less bosses, is way shorter (the box said 10 new single player levels even though there is 7 chapters which is about or at 12 segments total), and is just repetitive like a lot of other average shooter games.
Also keep in mind that the reason NOLF 2 was made was because of how successful NOLF 1 was (it's the most successful of all 3 games by far). NOLF 2 was still good, but less popular in the general public eye, and Contract Jack was just a bomb. I think either Monolith or FOX also lost the rights to the NOLF series which might be one reason why their servers are shut down so if there was going to be a NOLF 3 to whoever owns it now, it would probably be a lot different from the others.
A lot of games never completely die, which is still why we have a small community here, but this community alone is not enough to generate a reasonable profit off of because it is so small compared to any gaming audience.

I know this has been an issue in the past but I can't find any fix and it's more serious for me than most people.
At first my game could run fine with no errors on an older system with Windows XP but I got rid of it and got a new system with Windows Vista. It's possible that I had this error on XP too though and maybe not even on Vista at first. Regardless, the problem is getting worse over time.
The problems: Many times when turning a light on, off, or even if one flickers from a grenade especially in the Soviet levels the game will crash with the error "Client MFC has stopped working" and I have seen some weird driver error occasionally but not recently.
There's also grapical errors especially in the Soviet levels and certain parts of the Japan level from reloading sometimes such as the absence of some textures, weird bright colors making it hard to see, or scrambled up doors. In rare cases it makes my whole screen get totally messed up with a mix of colors permanently until I reboot my computer.
When loading a game from the main menu or even quickloading, the game may also crash with the client MFC error and can take 3-6 attempts to finally load the game.
Every time I try to load a game the music always stops and the word "Loading" freezes and then either I get the client MFC error or it somehow finishes loading, sometimes even without music; is that normal?
Even more current problems: Now the problem is so bad that any time I try to use the welder, stun gun (not electrical charge), rocket launcher (not grenades), or any machine gun (not shotgun or pistols though), my game will crash with the client MFC error. This makes it literally impossible to complete the game since you are forced to use the welder and a machine gun in certain areas.
Things that I've tried:
Getting Patch 1.3 and a No CD patch.
Running the game and the launcher (Nolf2.exe and Lithtech.exe) as an administrator and with compatibility modes such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista (Windows 98/ME won't let it start).
Disabling visual themes, desktop composition, Triplebuffering, Hardware Cursor and Hardware Sound, Movies, and Animated Load Screens (I can't do anything about Hardware Acceleration with Vista and an X64 bit Computer).
Reinstalling the game.
Rebooting my computer and doing system restores.
Scanning for viruses and spyware with up to date definitions.
Disabling UAC and my Antivirus.
Using 3D analyzer as directed to solve graphical problems.
Updating my drivers (Nvidia) and anything else that was outdated.
Cleaning my registry, removing temporary or useless files, and defragmenting my hard drive (I have a 4 GB RAM, Geforce GTS 250 video card, and 271 free GB of space on the hardrive where Nolf 2 is installed on so it shouldn't even be a problem).
That's about it.
Suprisingly, I also have Contract Jack installed (requires CD and has the latest patch) and I have had no problems at all with it or even the demo! It's very strange since both Nolf 2 and Contract Jack use the same engine, most of the same sprites, similar weapons, similar music, and were developed by the same company.
Can anyone help me or know what the problem is? Alot of my system specs are in the post if you need them but you can ask for more.

Is the community still active?

hirnschwund.net... I never see that one. Whenever I refresh the servers I only see the 6 Unity HQ ones and 2 Co-Op servers by OwN-3m-All, usually all at 0/4, 0/8/ or 0/16 players.
Anyway, "Mainstream" is exactly what I am comparing to. If a mainstream game had as little players as Nolf, it would easily be considered dead for sure. I mean some people (not me) consider World of Warcraft to be dieing yet it still has 8 million or more players.
You guys are right when you say Nolf isn't exactly like other games, but that doesn't mean it has to have this small a niche. I'd rather there to be way more players exposed to Nolfs greatness. I know for a fact that more people used this site more often, back in 2007 and before or so, plus there were some other Nolf websites that shut down around that time. Before master server shutdown there were always games up and running. So I was just being realistic. The game has way less players than it did before. When is that ever good?
