  1. Do you want a technical response or?

Suffice it to say the forum software uses skins that create the colours, fonts, CSS stylesheets and layouts etc.

I picked on that was in our budget that I thought works for the visions I've had for this site for 10 years now.

I am sorry that you disagree. The majority of the feedback on the new look has been positive. However I can't seem to please everyone no matter how much effort I put into all this.

I don't feel like arguing it anymore. It is what it is at this point.

Of course most of the feedback is going to be positive, most people don't want to criticize unless it's a really big problem to them. Me though, I don't mind expressing my honest opinion in a thread about the new look. You've wanted this look for 10 years? Hope you finally get some use out of it with the remaining community.

  2. The other one wasn't supported anymore for the version the board was on. That leads up to errors on the forum etc. I went with what was in the budget.

How does that have to do with what color the board is? The color comes in the same package and there was no option for white or something?

  3. Well the fancy forum skins are a bit expensive ;)

    Sorry you don't like it.

I didn't necessarily want a fancy forum skin, I was fine with the way it was. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Or even better, have both as options in your account preferences or something.

  4. NOLF 1 Fan Made Missions:

Forgotten Bunker (contains a few chapters): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=40

Last Stand: (contains several chapters): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=129

    Showdown: (contains several chapters): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=73

    P. I. Granny (contains one level): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=132

NOLF Stranded (contains one level): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=131

H.A.R.M. PRISON (contains one level): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=130

    NOLF 2 Fan Made Missions:

Return of H.A.R.M. (contains one chapter): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=20

Better Red Than Dead (contains one chapter): http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=28

I can't find the Grow Op link (if it's even still on this site). Better Red Than Dead is "Chapter 17" though.

Contract JACK doesn't have any fan made missions that I know of.

  5. I knew it was too good to be true. Seriously though, WB probably thinks that it isn't worth the effort, even if it would only require a minimal amount from them. Remember that Activision and Fox might still own some rights, and WB doesn't want to set themselves up for a potential copyright infringement lawsuit from them. Activision and Fox don't seem to think that it'd be worth the effort either. Remember that these are old, non mainstream games, and potentially splitting whatever minimal profits they might make between 4 companies? That's doesn't sound too appealing. Basically as someone else said:

—None of the companies want to spend the time to figure out the legal rights they may have.

—Night Dive has control of the actual NAME.

—All of the companies want a piece of the pie without any effort, and are threatening legal action if they don't get it.

Yes, copyright laws are supposed to benefit society and creativity rather than hinder it, but unfortunately it sometimes causes the opposite to happen.

  6. I thought I'd bring this topic to attention again. This is a nice chart to reference but I'd like to add to this. Rescue Attempt, Scene 2 has an enemy that deals explosive damage with a Grenade Launcher, in the tower at the end of the level. You also missed one of the Grenade Launcher enemies in Trouple in the Tropics, Scene 2. One is by the bridge and one is in the tower at the end of the level. The difficulty doesn't change what types of ammo the enemies use.

Anyway here are my suggestions on what to equip for each mission. Remember that the Fuzzy Slippers are almost always a viable option if you want to try avoiding combat. Generally you don't want to equip the Earplugs because there are barely any enemies that they help for, and explosives can be fatal regardless. While the Antitoxin will completely nullify poison damage, it will not stop your aim from becoming crippled, and there are not many enemies that it helps for. Bandages will completely stop the bleeding damage caused by dum dum rounds, but the Fire Extinguisher only reduces the burning damage caused by phosphorous rounds (and other heat sources such as fire and steam). If you don't want to bother memorizing this chart then just remember that when in doubt, go with Bandages.

The Assignment - N/A (it doesn't let you equip anything for this mission, and there are no enemies anyway).

    Misfortune in Morocco - Bandages

    Berlin by Night - Bandages

    Unexpected Turbulence - Bandages

Rendezvous in Hamburg - Probably the Fire Extinguisher since it helps for two enemies, but the Bandages do help for one enemy that has a machine gun.

A Tenuous Lead - Preferebly Bandages, but the Fire Extinguisher would also help.

    The Dive - Bandages

A Man of Influence - Fuzzy Slippers

Safecracker - Preferebly Bandages, but the Fire Extinguisher would also help.

Rescue Attempt - Preferebly Bandages, but the Fire Extinguisher would also help.

Trouble in the Tropics - N/A (you're stuck with SCUBA Gear which takes up the gear spot).

Low Earth Orbit - Fuzzy Slippers

Alpine Intrigue - Bandages (although if you want to try wearing the Earplugs, this would be the level to do so).

The Indomitable Cate Archer - Bandages or the Fire Extinguisher (same number of enemies with each type).

A Very Large Explosion - Bandages or the Fire Extinguisher (same number of enemies with each type, although a significant enemy has phosphorous rounds).

Such is the Nature of Revenge - Antitoxin (there's one in the final battle, but there's no point in equipping anything else or exposing yourself to get it).

Rest and Relaxation - N/A (it doesn't let you equip anything for this mission, and you can find stuff along the way anyway).

Also to address your last comment, these items generally aren't found in missions where they are useful since the idea is to equip them in other missions. The Fire Extinguisher is found in Misfortune in Morocco, Scene 4, where there are no enemies with phosphorous rounds. The Earplugs are found in A Tenuous Lead, Scene 3, where there are no enemies with explosive rounds. The Antitoxin is first found in The Dive, Scene 3, where there are no enemies with cyanide rounds. The Bandages are found in A Man of Influence, Scene 2, where there are no enemies with dum dum rounds. The Fuzzy Slippers are found in Rescue Attempt, Scene 3, where they won't give you much use for the rest of the level. The exceptions to this are the Antitoxin in Such is the Nature of Revenge, Scene 2 which is the last normal level, and the items in Rest and Relaxation which is a bonus level.

  7. since this is the newst thread here(or perhaps the last with a post) this may be news:

    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/05/02/no-one-lives-forever-re-release/

Siliconera discovered that Night Dive has filed trademarks for No One Lives Forever, The Operative, Contract J.A.C.K., and A Spy in H.A.R.M.’s Way, which seems to suggest it also has the rights to back up those trademarks. Night Dive itself isn’t quite ready to discuss future plans, but things sound damn promising

I don't think they actually have the rights, but according to a comment on that post:

"By submitting a trademark application for NOLF, they’re forcing the actual rights-holder (if there’s any) to come out of the woodwork and block that trademark application. Like you saw with the Scrolls case, a trademark holder has to defend its trademark otherwise it loses it."

I guess they are still waiting or something? It's been over 4 months. Why didn't anyone try this sooner?

  8. Oh, also, I suggest that,if you have not done it yet, you do the "host file modification" as explained in the qtracker website. You do not need to add all those lines to your host file, just add two of them, these ones:

    65.112.87.186 master.gamespy.com

    65.112.87.186 master0.gamespy.com

and you are good to go, which means you will be able to see all NOLF servers from inside the game itself, no need for a 3rd party application to join.

    Got it working too thanks.

  9.

I understand Coldowns point of view, but its not a new point of view, im sure many of us wish to spraypaint 'PLAY NOLF!' on the moon so people play these great series of games.

But to look on the positive side, there is at least a home for nolf lovers here, with a pimped up download section, and just so much Cate archer love oozeing from most every page.

We of course would not have this without Eliteone, who has put her money where her mouth is and just done it, with community help, made these forums live on.

And anytime I have messaged a member, the replys given have not been rude or no reply at all, it has been with maturity, and a love for what nolf is. That to me is worth more than having a forum full of 'lolcopters' trolling and generally being abusive.

So yes people are still active, and whats more, it is an actual community of people with a common love, that are so persistent, this still remains, even after all these years. =)

I would encourage anyone reading this who have not posted before, post away, build the community.

For such a poorly advertised, game that is far outdated, its holding up quite well.

Every game never completely "dies", there's always some small cult of people willing to hack the game/make servers to keep it playable and to add value to it, or the occasional person who wants to relive their nostalgia moments. That's sort of a no brainer, but I'd say there's no more than 50 or so people here who visit on a regular basis, IF that. We certainly aren't ever all on at the same time, which doesn't help. Maybe a little more on weekends.

There used to be some other Nolf sites that apparently "shall not be named", but they all shutdown. They maybe weren't part of our community, but they were still part of a Nolf community. One of them had several good single player mods that I didn't want to see dissappear. At least we got them onto this site now.

  10. There are seldom cameras that can be destroyed without an alarm going off, and even less civilians that you can kill. The devs probably forgot to add the alarm/fail trigger and never noticed, but why not use it to your advantage? I'll note if they are fixed in the PS2 version of Nolf 1. There's also some in Nolf 2 as well. I'm pretty sure I've tested every camera and civilian in both games for anyone wondering.

    Nolf 1:

The Assignment, Scene 2: Not that it really matters, but all the cameras can be slapped and destroyed without an alarm going off. This was not fixed/changed in the PS2 version.

A Man of Influence, Scene 2: The last camera in this stage. It's in the far corner, behind the trailer with chemical containers on it (near the gate where the mission ends). There is a guard or two in this area to deal with though. In the PS2 version this camera was removed entirely.

Trouble in the Tropics, Scene 4: The one and only camera at the start of this mission. Make sure no one else sounds an alarm though. This was not fixed in the PS2 version.

Civilian Kill: In Low Earth Orbit, Scene 1, the bartender isn't considered a civilian (unlike every other mission with one), so you can kill him without failing the mission. Other than scientists, this is the ONLY civilian you can kill in the entire game. This was fixed in the PS2 version.

Edit: Apparently you can kill one of the two Unity Agents in A Very Large Explosion Scene 2. Killing the first one that you talk to in a cutscene will make you fail the mission, but the second one that tries to fight the two Elite Guards at the end can be killed. So you don't have to worry about accidentally killing him when fighting the Elite Guards. This was fixed in the PS2 version.

    Nolf 2:

Chapter 5, Night Flight: Every single camera can be shot without setting off an alarm in this chapter. It's possible that this could be intentional since the facility is under lockdown at this point, but an alarm can still go off if a camera spots you (before you shoot it), or if an alarm button is pressed. Also as a general tip for any level with cameras, if an alarm goes off you can shoot as many cameras as you want before the alarm resets.

Civilian Kill: In Chapter 7, Doublecross - The Password: In the last area (where you pick up the bug to plant on Balaphi Malphani's phone), there is a male civilian behind a counter with the dialogue "Maybe I can clear my calendar and take you out to dinner tonight." that can be killed. Once again, other than scientists, this is the ONLY civilian that you can kill in the entire game.

  11. It's happening

    ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Well that's shocking, but it's still no guarantee: "At this time we are unable to comment on future plans. I would like to add that our team has a great fondness for these games and our hope is that they will one day be re-released." Released, well that'd be a good start, but would multiplayer be supported? What about the long awaited sequel, Nolf 3? In the hands of another company it's bound to be different than what 2003 Monolith would have made.

  12. Playing this Last Stand Mod for NOLF 1 and totally stuck on a roof with no way of getting down...any one played this yet...I even tried googling a walk through or You tube video but no luck.

Oh yeah, I got this several years ago and played through it a few times since then, nice to know someone else is playing it. I assume you're on "The Mill" level. In that case, once you've climbed the ladder up to the roof, look for a crate with a zipcord target and hookshot to it. Now this is probably where you're stuck on and it took me awhile to figure out too, to get down you need to make a tough jump to the railing of the stairs attached to the side of a building across from you. Yes, it's barely possible, so quicksave right before attempting the jump. You can also try crouch falling onto the balcony railing to the right of this area, and then crouch falling to a little window crevice, but you'll lose most of your health this way.

This mod hasn't gotten any walkthroughs or support that I know of, so feel free to ask any more questions that you have. The last few levels are hard if you're playing on a higher difficulty, especially because they have some saving issues (you aren't able to reaload a save if you save in some parts).

  13. woohoo!, another classic game's Multiplayer live-span saved thanks to our modding community! :fit:

If you can really call whatever is left of the "life-span" to be considered "saving" it. But a few days ago I looked at the official server list and there was one person in one of the servers, so they are apparently still working, as Contract Jill said.

Edit: Apparently that was the last day or so.

  14.

You realize you responded to a post that was from 2011 right?

I thought necroing threads was accepted here. Plus, there's always a chance some of these users are still on, right?

Also I've looked in walkthroughs and such, I can't find mention of the rubber shoes anywhere, so I really want to know.

  15. 1. Can you please give the full link? I would like to look at it.

    2. I don't think this makes difference. GOTY has 1 additional mission, but I doubt it gives you anything (must check, though).

    ==

I can help you with the items, but a little later, maybe 2-3 days.

THe only thing I can say now is that you have to:

    - take Bandages if ou know enemies use Dum-Dum bullets a lot.

    - take Fuzzy Slippers (the item! lol) to the every stealth mission.

    - the Rubber shoes don't work, their function is banned in the options, though you see them in the menu.

    - general advice: try to remember, what is the main ammo used against you: dum-dum, phos or cyanide, and choose one item yourself: bandages, fire extigusher or antitoxin.

    - ear plugs are quite useless: there aren't that many places where you're attacked by explosion damage.

(not by items, but by guns) - take Glasses on the following missions: Misfortune in Morocco (SCENE 4!); Alpine Intrigue (SCENE 3). That's all I can say now. I'll make a lil report on guns later as well, if you need if, ofc.

I know it's been awhile, but despite their function not working, can you please tell me where you find the Rubber shoes? I don't think I've ever found them.

Just for reference, here's the complete list of where to find the other bonus items (not including the Rest and Relaxation level with many of them in the GOTY edition):

Fire Extinguisher: In Mistfortune in Morocco Scene 4 in the minefield (without glasses, stay along the edge of it until you get to the back to avoid getting blown up!)

Function: Reduces fire damage from phosphorus bullets.

Ear Plugs: In A Tenuous Lead Scene 3 you need to bring the belt buckle to get onto that ledge just before the blocked off gangplank onto the ship, and jump across the falling wood platforms.

Function: Reduces slight damage from grenades and explosives.

Antitoxin: In The Dive Scene 3 inside the sunken ship, in the kitchen on the table. It's also in the middle of the graveyard in Such is the Nature of Revenge Scene 2.

Function: Blocks ALL poison damage, but your aim still gets temporarily weakened for the full amount of time.

Bandages: In A Man of Influence Scene 2 in the garadge full of crates. You can jump ontop of the crates and then onto the ledge where they are at.

Function: Reduces bleeding damage from Dum-Dum bullets.

Fuzzy Slippers: In Rescue Attempt Scene 3 in the stall in the women's bathroom.

Function: Reduces movement noise by half so that enemies are less likely to hear you.

As for what to bring on missions, you should usually use the Bandages, or sometimes maybe the Fire Extinguisher. Most of the enemies with special ammo use dum dum rounds, or sometimes phospherous. While the Antioxin may seem tempting to use due to giving you full immunity, there's not that many enemies with cyanide rounds. There's even less with grenades and explosives, and the earplugs don't help much anyway. See this topic: http://unityhq.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2544

Once you're more confident you might want to bring the Fuzzy Slippers in ALL missions, at least to help get a better stealth rating if you care about it, but keep in mind that in reality an enemy hearing your footsteps doesn't usually give you away. The enemies are often too stupid to fully look around and lose interest quickly (although in some of the missions they do look around in response to noise). Sometimes it actually HELPS you if they get distracted because they might look AWAY, sort of like how it's usually easier to shoot them once they run up to a dead body, ironically. But you still may prefer to keep your presence hidden as much as you can.

  16. INCOMING NECROPOST DETECTED...

    PLEASE STANDBY FOR NECROPOST...

    NECROPOSTING IN 3... 2... 1...

    POST!

    Hi there NOLF fans!

Just felt like adding to this nice thread. There was a free fantasy on-line-only game that came out nearly a decade ago that used a modified lithtech 2.5 engine. I've forgotten the name of said multiplayer game, but it had bumpmapping and a few other niceties tacked on to ye olden pre-jup- lith engine. Not saying it would be easy or even practical, but it has been done. Permission to do so is another matter entirely of course.

Welcome back fellow necroposter, isn't it nice to actually be allowed to necro threads here? I have no idea what game you are talking about but I happen to like the graphics and physics in Nolf 1. It's much more fun climbing and running in Nolf 1 because you are faster and can jump/latch onto more things more easily. It may not be natural, but thats the fun part about video games. If you really want better graphics and physics you can just play Nolf 2 (or Contract Jack lol).

I don't get how the OP thinks the AI in Nolf 1 is better than in Nolf 2. They seem pretty similar, except that in Nolf 2 there's some obvious improvements, like how they actually know how to use ladders and will kick open doors so you can't just block them/shoot them through the window or door opening. They will also notice an open door/drawer/cabinet and get suspicious in Nolf 2, unlike Nolf 1. I guess they give up searching for you faster in Nolf 2, and also will lose you more easily if you run and hide, but both of those things are more realistic and make it so you don't feel like the AI is cheating.

  17. You didn't read my post.

Multiplayer is still working officially in NOLF1 - just install it, open it up and start playing. :)

Wow, I used to play on them a long time ago and thought they just shut down. Guess I lost patience and never waited long enough for the servers to load again. Mind=blown. Course there's no one on right now, but it's an off time. Why on earth would they shut down Nolf 2 servers before Nolf 1?

  18. Better late than never. I literally just found out that Nolf 1 still has official servers running, so can you make it a Co-Op server? Someone posted a thread on how to get it working. At the very least, hopefully another server in the future can be Co-Op.

  19. As long as you are playing the PC version (NOT the PS2 version), you should be able to quick save with the F6 key and reload that quicksave with the F9 key as long as you aren't in multiplayer mode. It should even work for single player custom mod maps (like in Forgotten Bunker, Last Stand, or Showdown). In those first 2 mods though, there's a bug in some levels where you never get past the loading screen if you quick save past a certain point, or even anywhere in some levels, and try to reload. You'd have to restart the level (or at least don't quick save past that certain point if you can find it) in that case, so it's possible that other custom made maps will have that problem.

F6 gets the job done, thank you. I did find a mod that turns the cameras off, not sure that I'll use it now that I'm playing in line with the NOLF's dynamic instead of running through the map blasting everything.

No problem, and I did hear about that mod that disables the security cameras, but I never thought of the alarm going off as much of an issue (aside from the missions where it can't go off or you fail period) because most of the time enemies *still* don't know where you are, but they will be able to spot you faster. Still, even on Superspy I can just blast my way through everything, but that non stop piercing noise it makes is annoying. Hopefully if you play it enough you'll get that good too.

As for the difficulty, regardless of which version you play, you can still change it in game (rather than right before starting the game on the first level) by pressing the escape key to access the menu, click options, then game, and make sure that the "difficulty" area is set on easy if you want the easiest level. You shouldn't be having a hard time on easy even without quicksaving though; the enemies do very little damage, aren't that accurate, and you get a lot of reaction time to get out of a camera's view before it triggers the alarm (2 seconds instead of just half a second on Superspy).

  21. The Chapters being "skipped" are the chapters that crash the server.

As I can't be on call to reboot it multiple times per day something had to give.

Other choice is for me to put it back on the actual Co-Op maps.

Actually I was playing with someone yesterday who told me the India levels (chapters 7 and 8) got removed by mistake and should still work fine, but apparently all the Soviet chapters jam the server.

Are you absolutely sure that chapter 13 crashes the server or did it also get removed by mistake? He wasn't aware of it being removed, and again, it's in the same place as chapter 12.

So see if you can put chapters 7, 8, and 13 back and just keep 3, 4, and 5 out.

Just wondering, but can we not have both single player Co-Op and the actual Co-Op levels on the same server or even 2 different ones? I do remember playing that mode on these servers and the India levels in that form of Co-Op seemed to work fine. Only the Soviet levels were removed.

  22.

Yeah, that is because you are talking about NOLF2 and I am talking about NOLF1, which is a HUGE difference.

NOLF1 still has official Gamespy support - you put in the CD and you start playing. NOLF2 wasn't so lucky.

Can you link me to that page and/or show me where I can set up multiplayer for Nolf 1 again?

  23. I noticed that Co-op on the Unity HQ servers completely skips when we are first in India (chapters 7 and 8). How come? If it's due to some game crashing bug during the trycycle chase at the end of chapter 8, can't we just skip chapter 8 and still play chapter 7? I'd like to point out that we DON'T skip chapter 10, which is also in India.

It also completely skips chapter 13 where you get to fight Pierre and escape the Underwater Base. Texture wise and such chapter 13 isn't much different than chapter 12 either (which is not skipped) so why is chapter 13 skipped?

With regards to the Soviet part (Chapters 3-5, which is also completely skipped) we should only have to skip chapter 4 since that is the only chapter where there is mandatory computer prompts (which we can't use due to the LivesForever mod). Otherwise, chapters 3 and 5 are similar to chapter 9, which is another snowy area with similar buildings and other textures (which is not skipped). I think we can manage only having 1 snowmobile if that's the problem (sometimes there's more later in the level).

So we should only have to skip all of chapters 4 and 8 at most, because the "bugged" parts are only in the last part of BOTH those chapters. It's no fun having to skip parts and ruin the depth of the game, so if anything has to be skipped, it should be far and few, not over 1/3 of the game! Please add chapters 3, 5, 7, and 13 back!
