  1. Wow, I used to play on them a long time ago and thought they just shut down. Guess I lost patience and never waited long enough for the servers to load again. Mind=blown. Course there's no one on right now, but it's an off time. Why on earth would they shut down Nolf 2 servers before Nolf 1?

Because the game validation for NOLF2 was handled by Sierra. For NOLF 1, Gamespy

Although neither the most recent recent patch notes nor the January Game Director letter mentions it, something happened in The Secret World recently that might, if you believe the cries of some, portend the beginning of the end for the horror-filled game. What powerful behemoth will be responsible for slaying TSW and grinding it into the ground? No, not the Økokrim; this time, it's the mighty Mystery box.

Players logging in since January 30th have been met with a launchpad announcement heralding the introduction of the new Mystery Box to the item store. And while some players are up in arms about the significance of this addition, I'm going to tell you why it's no big deal.

In many respects, The Secret World is a strange MMO that doesn't follow the typical paths that its contemporaries do. It probably has fewer quests that most MMOs, and even factoring in the increased time and difficulty to accomplish them, I suspect that it's not as content-rich of a game as its ravenous community expected it to be.

Months ago I "beat" the game as I see it, having finished all of the missions and main storyline. That left me feeling off-kilter because I didn't know what to do next. I still am feeling less focused than I had been while leveling because the core of TSW to me is the excellent missions and the stories tied to these zones, and I simply wanted more of them. Even with the generally excellent issues from 2013, I'm still endlessly pining for Tokyo, and if that doesn't get here in February, then I'm going to start developing long-distance telepathic powers to make it get done.

So I've been chewing on what to do now. It's not as though TSW lacks options; it's just that they're either quite different from the game that I've played up to this point; they're repetitive or group-dependent or require some self-motivation to go after them. I made a list to help focus my future efforts and thought I'd share that with you today.

  4. Fisrst of all, sorry for my english, I'm from Poland so I don't speak english well. I downloaded NOLF1_MP_FINAL.REZ, created a folder "Custom" in /// Fox/No One Lives Forever /// and there's no "customize" button in Launcher. What is wrong?

It should go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Fox\No One Lives Forever (on a 64 bit machine) and C:\Program Files\Fox\No One Lives Forever (on a 32 bit machine)

Did you extract the REZ from the zip file (file is compressed on our downloads)

  5. EDIT 2:

Fix for Mouse Stutter & Framerate

Even better! I've packaged both compatibility settings into a shim using the Microsoft Application Compatibility Manager. Download this zip, follow the instructions in the README file, and you'll be all set.

    Original Post:

Found a fix for the mouse stutter!

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2908279

Make sure you have applied all outstanding patches for Windows 8.1, then scroll down to the bit about the registry. If yours is anything like mine, you'll already have a compatibility flag listed in the entry, simply append a space and add "NoDTToDITMouseBatch" as explained in the article (don't overwrite the existing value).

As it says, back up your registry first - nasty things can always happen with regedit.

EDIT: I was also able to fix the framerate in fullscreen using the instructions here:

    http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=99477

Scroll down to where it talks about the MS Application Compatibility Toolkit and follow the instructions for lithtech.exe. I'm looking into ways to deploy this fix without the toolkit for others in the future.

    Nice job.

I've uploaded it HERE on Unityhq as well

  6. Please remove the Siberia map in CO-OP. It's preventing the server from advancing the maps. :)

YAY that means you're actually using the server....... :)

    Give it a try now.

Maybe it's my age or maybe it's just a little bit of laziness about me, but I'm finding myself a little peeved whenever someone or something wants to make me learn a new system. I mean, I'll be the one constantly reading Wikipedia to all hours of the night because I like soaking up info, but if a game asks me to go through a two-minute tutorial, I'm like, "Forget that!" and upturn my computer desk while I go to the other room to calm down.

It's not that I don't like learning -- I end up really enjoying myself when I do, in fact -- but that the energy and attention required to absorb a new lesson can often be a tad daunting. This is what drives me back into familiar gaming arms again and again, and why I'm more than a little apprehensive about all of the sandbox tools that will be coming to MMOs near us.

That's why I have to hand it to The Secret World -- here's an MMO that pushed me out of my comfort bubble and made me learn, sometimes kicking and screaming, and sometimes with a giddy and joyful heart. This is an MMO that isn't content to spoon-feed you the same mush you've been downing for years; it's one that operates under a practical mission statement of teaching through gameplay.

  8. Since Im stuck at some menu positioning issues on the Nolf2 widescreen patch, I decided to make an extended patch for Nolf aswell.

    Here is Version 1:

    Features:

-Pick supported widescreen resolutions in the display menu, the 16 Bit modes have been removed.

-Set horizontal FOV through command line. The vertical FOV is calculated automatically

-The splashscreen and menu backgrounds are no longer stretched.

    Installation:

    1. Put the "WidescreenPatch.rez" file in your NOLF directory.

    2. Run the launcher, click on "Advanced".

    3. Put this into the commandline field: „-rez "WidescreenPatch.rez"„ (without the outer quotes).

    4. Make sure "always pass these command-line parameters" is checked.

    5. The default horizontal FOV is 90, if you want to change that, add „++fovX "value"„ to the end of the

command line (once again without the outer quotes).

    3. Start the game, go to display and select the desired resolution.

    Enjoy the game!

    Known Problems:

-The first person weapons remain stretched. The scaling is apparently done by the engine and contrary to Nolf2

there is no console command to set the aspect.

    Download from Mediafire

In the future I will try to make the hud elements and menus scale with the resolution but im not sure if I will be successfull because the menus are set up much more primitively than in Nolf 2.

Nice. I'll get it added to the downloads here as well later today.

  9. Like all day on the weekend, or what time? How many of you guys?

I guess the servers must get some use, or they wouldn't still be up, right? Still, if it's mostly only on the weekends, that's still "mostly no one" if you count those other 5 days of the week, especially compared to other online games.

    Why so "downer" ?

NOLF games have a niche following. Are the anything like Call of Duty? no and they never will be.

Weekends people gather on the servers, mostly DD around 3PM US Eastern time. The weekdays it varies.

The servers are paid for by community members who pitch in every month so they must still have a passion for the games to do this every month.

We have new people registering here every week so these games are not dead by any means either.

  10. Well, it's not like there's always people online like a typical MMO game these days, quite frankly there's usually NO ONE as you've noticed, with forum conversations spanning over months or years from inactivity. But you may have luck if you stay in a server for awhlie and people notice that it's not empty (omg another person! lol).

We gather on the servers every weekend and sometime during the week as well. So your statement isn't entirely accurate.

When December wrapped up, so too did The Secret World's first full calendar year, having debuted the summer prior. Coincidentally, the timing also marked the first year of the buy-to-play business model; the game transitioned in December 2012. Looking back over those 12 months, I wonder what can be said of the horror-themed MMO. Certainly updates and new content didn't come as quickly as players would have preferred (what game can ever deliver that?!), but there was still plenty of activity during that time. We're going to delve into highlights of TSW's year that started with awarding all players a coveted pet to counter an exploit discovered during the 2012 holiday event and ended with Hel on earth.

  12. I found out something strange lately: I have a notebook with an Intel Graphics Card and an additional NVidia Card. I forced the game to run on my Nvidia Card, because the game has lots of glitches running on the Intel Card. Just for fun, I tried to force the game to run on my Intel Card, and I found out that the mouse doesn't jump anymore. It stops from time to time, but it's much more playable than before. Now I'm very confused, because the mouse issue seems to have something to do with the graphics card... O_O Maybe we use similar computers, because most people seem to play the game on Windows 8.1 without issues...

Sounds about right with Nivida and AMD drivers the framerate caps at 30 FPS on Win 8.1. Some have corrects their issues by running it on compatibility mode for Windows XP

  13. Looking great, looking forward to try it asap... in next couple of days I hope :)

Since I haven't played game for couple of years, can you give me some instructions how to play the game on Win8, what do I need, and is there maybe some more modifications on game that I should also download to play in best today's graphics?

    Thanks...

The good news is NOLF2 works on Win 8 and Win 8.1 (had 8.0 now I have 8.1) thing is you have to let it run as administrator.

The graphics are the same as when the game was last patched.
